Curious what I should do.

My end goal is a megasquirt EFI (already started building the controller and gathering up pieces), but even Megasquirt recommends breaking an engine in on a reliable carb to avoid break in issues due to a/f problems.

Problem is I do not have a reliable carb that I 100 percent know I can slap on the engine and have it fire and run on the first crank. I am going to have to purchase a carb for this particular engine until the EFI gets completed. What is going to be my best bet for a purchase that could get me up and running right away? I know I've heard Edelbrocks are normally configured out of the box to run. Not perfectly, but run. Correct?

When my 850 Holley took a dump I took the 500cfm Eddy off my slant and threw it on my 440 for a while, ran fine, just dont go WOT and you should be okay...Any friends have a carb they arent using on their project til you get the EFI installed?

All the edelbrocks I have had have been a disaster as far as settings go. I take them apart and reset everything before using them. I'm sure you could get an engine to start and run with one right out of the box, but if the floats are way off you'll loose your sanity trying to drive the car that way.

They are very simple to work with and if you take the time to set the float drop + put the air mixture screws 1-1/2 - 2-1/2 turns out it should do the job.

I know exactly 0 people in the area that would have a reliably running carb on their vehicle. I'm sort of lacking on the gear-head friends, unfortunately.

If I'm correct in how this is supposed to work, I just need the engine to run for ~20 minutes at varying RPMs.

There is an engine break-in procedure in the archives. I'd also add a 1/2" or so of gas into the float bowls to help it start up.

I guess my default question would be:

Is there a carb available that I can slap onto the intake and know that it's going to start and run (maybe not perfectly, but well enough) for the entire duration of the break-in so I don't have to worry about trying to tune it, check timing, and perform the break-in? Like I said, I've heard Edelbrocks are pretty stable out of the box. Is there any other option?

No out of the box carb will be able to slap on and go and be perfect. The only one I know of that *should* be setup decently when it arrives at your doorstep would be a reworked thermoquad by member demonsizzler, thermoquads.com is his website. He baselines them before shipping them out, he doesn't just slap them together. But that's still a fair amount of dough to spend just to get something for the initial break-in. But I agree w/ the megasquirt manual, you don't really want to break in an engine on an efi controller with no tune on it.

Maybe there's a moparts member in the area who would be willing to lend you a carb?

my new holley 750 3310 was right-on outta the box...best carb I've had in years. light years ahead of the POS Edelbrock 750 I had... I actually put the holley on the 440 in my truck just to see if it would work before I used it as the break-in carb on my NEW motor. it was perfect. but with any unknown carb, if you could test it out on a different engine first, it would be a good idea... hate to have a stuck float during a cam break-in!
