60 views and no replies, so here's a bump.
There is a local guy that has one in his 32.
Nice car; Black with silver sides painted with realistic flames 20 years ago. It's been in mags and he's put a ton of miles on it.

I've got a 1955 DeSoto 291" Hemi, still unsure of it's exact destination. It will be in a rod or early rod style custom when it does end up somewhere.I just have to build it first, well someday.Anybody have a spare early mopar body?

This is my brother's 241 Hemi. He bought it off of here 3 years ago for $2,000. It had 40,000 original miles!! We put some decent used tires on it that I had lying around, ditched the oil bath air cleaner for a small paper style element, put on a glass pack which we branched into "duals", and sprayed the whole thing Rustoleum flat black. Total investment was less than $2,200. He then drove it up to Lake George, NY and has used it as a daily driver on-and-off ever since. I regret not buying the car myself!

My 241 is going in a '31 A coupe. It'll be a traditional hiboy with a T-5 5 speed.It will look something like this.

Man, stick a hemi in that and it would be my idea of a PERFECT rod!

I have one. It's in a 5 window 54 two ton truck. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I have a 392 Hemi also, not sure what I'm going to do with that either.

I've got a 241 Red Ram that I pulled out of a swamp, where it sat upside down in the mud since 1962. So right about when I was born!
I've been collecting parts to "put it right", but really don't have use for it right now.
Oh yes, I've got to get the stuck pistons out of the bores before I do anything else!!

Yeah, I found it bird dogging a 315 Red Ram a guy supposedly had for sale. I was asking some guys at a local JY about it, and they put me on to this one. I was told it was a 330 Desoto Fire Dome, got there and found a 331 instead! The guy just wanted to get rid of it, he was going to use it in a Chevy Luv truck, decided it was too much work and went SBC. I got reaaaaaaall lucky!! BTW I'm still on the trail of the 315... Block, heads, valve covers and crank for 150.00 is the story.....

I just picked up a 354, pretty cheap off craigslist, needs a rebuild, I plan on putting it in a glass Willys coupe that I have, needs a ton of work, its on an S10 (blasphemy! ) chassis, I'm looking for an original frame, going gasser style, oh yeah.

Maybe not a baby Dodge HEMI but here is my '65 Valiant with a '56 354 Chrysler HEMI. We also have a '59 315 Dodge, '55 270 Dodge, and a '58 392 Chrysler, but we are not sure where they will find their homes. We got some ideas like an old '55 Nash Metropolitan Altered for the 392 and maybe one of those Dodges will find a home in '40 Willys 4-door gasser or maybe a '52 Studebaker Commander... Thanks Brian & Gordy

I had a 66 Valiant that someone started to turn into a pro street, but I had too many projects at the time, so I sold it real cheap, your car makes me wish I had kept it. I showed my wife the pics, she said 'Wow, you should have kept yours, idiot!'

Really neat car, I love it!

Yeah...I'd REALLY like to see that one in person one day......my first thought was "smallest engine bay for an A-body and they've got a whale in it!"

i have a'54 241 in a '36 Plymouth coupe. it's all Mopar, front to back; the trans is an A-833 4spd out of a '69 Charger and the rear end is from a '69 (i think) GTX. unfortunately i can't load a picture as my nitwit (future) son-in-law fried the pc with all my pictures on it. btw, the engine has been built up and with the 3x2 carburetion, it looks pretty good too.

Is this a baby Hemi? Well probably more of a juvenile delinquent Hemi.

A guy I know has been trying to sell me a early Fifties Coronet with a baby Hemi. Not sure of the size,241 probably. The one's with the bellhousing cast onto the back of the block. Are they worth doing? The car is original needing alot of work but complete. I keep saying it's not worth as much as he thinks (you know the type, has a Hemi so it's worth gold)

I was going to put the engine in my 49 Plymouth Deluxe and .

As far as I know only the 51-53 Chrysler 331s had the built in bellhousing. In fact in the "Tex Smith's The Complete Chrysler Hemi Engine Manual" they state DeSoto and Dodge never had the extended bellhousing. HTH

I am building A blown street 92 and I want to put it in a 68 fastback cuda! But I am still trying to figure out the best way so I can run full length headers? So far the alterkation front end with preinsatalled 92 mounts seem the best so far and thats about 3 grand or so just for that!

Would love a baby hemi for my rat rod p/u but cannot afford one. Very expensive to build as well. Guess I'll have to stick to 318 power...

331's especially long bell 331's are not every expensive at least here in the midwest it seems. I have seen one's in good to great shape from 500 to 1000. I cant imagine for a re-ring kit or a complete rebuilt with machine shop work would be much cheaper for a small block mopar? Its not like we are talking an early hemi vs a 350 chevy which you can build with money saved up from a couple of trips picking up aluminum cans.

Price varies depending on what engine you get and what year it is for the Chryslers. For example, the 392 is the most expensive with complete engines being a couple grand and bare unmolested blocks going upwards of $1k. Next would be the 354 which is usually half or less than a 392, and then the 331's with the later 54+ 331's being more valuable than the early 331 extended bell motors. Rebuilt kits are in the $1500+ range with crank, rings, pistons, cam and gaskets. This doesnt include the additional cost of a front chain cover to allow for a BBC water pump to be used.

Really depends on what was found and what condition it is in, I am not positive but I believe one of the guys from RM mobarn was trying to sell a 331 longbell engine for $500 and it took awhile.

I'm new to the Hemi planet, but I am building a '24
Dodge Brothers coupe using a stock frame with a one-off suicide front and a vintage sprint car open tube quickie. A 241 with twin deuces will power through a turbo 350. Should be a hoot. I'll be asking a lot of questions along the way, and I'll
photo log the build. I brought the frame in today to start mock-up.

I don't know where a rebuilt or new would be available, but I'm not going to use mine. I'm gonna switch to the sbc pump. You are welcome to it.As for my '24, I have a super t10 laying around, so I'm probably gonna put it in the old rod.

I don't know if I am going to run the 426 style boots or the wire covers yet

My 241 Red Ram will stay right where it's at - in the engine bay of a 53 Coronet convert. Have pics of it as found after 44 years in storage, but they are too big to post.

I has the water pump housing and found a guy on ebay from jersey that had a rebuit pump. I figures I would give it a try before converting to a chevy pump. I wanted that stock look also

Will the 241 Red Ram valve covers fit on a 315 or 325 Dodge? I love those..so cool with the ram figure on them! But I would like the bigger cid motor for the power.

yes same size heads except the valve sizes,,,the embossed heads,, with the words red ram and DODGE and the running ram,are the harder to find,,not all 241s had them, some had the smooth type as well, do you have a motor yet ?

Ok thanks. Did they come on the 55 270s? I could swear that my folks '55 Royal Lancer had the ones with the running ram on them...but i was too little to see them myself.

No I dont have a motor yet, just thinking ahead to a future project. I have a chance to get a 50 Dodge business coupe and thought a little hemi would be a cool mill for it.

Thanks for the info, I checked out Hot Heads and they had only one 325 Hemi for sale..wants $2800 for it. Are these motors kinda rare? I suppose I could always go with a nice 392, but would like to keep it all Dodge.

hot heads has a classified section,,,motors and parts for sale all the time,,the dodge hemis are the smalest phisical in size,, and cost as much as the bug inch chryslers to build,,and a lot less performance parts for the dodge,,,the 241 seems to be plenty ful compared to the 315/325 no one wants to give them up,,

I know, you can get some nice alum. heads for the Chyslers. A built 392 would be a really stout piece compared to a Dodge. Thats alot of horse power to give up just for being able to run a Dodge. This is something I will have to think about. Even the 270s are fairly common. Can the 270s be stroked?

i guess if u wanna have custom parts made,,315/325 would be a beeter deal,,but still no realt performance parts,, maybe a better intake selection,, the chrysler is the way to go if your looking for easy to get parts, and HP,, if your cas has the room under the hood for a big chrysler

Here's a pic of my 53 Coronet convert. I'd include a pic of the Red Ram engine, but the only one I have mostly shows just the 44 years of grease & grime. Maybe later.

325 Dodge hemi already has a 3.80" stroke. To get 390 cubes, you'd need about a 4.5" stroke.

Problem with the early Dodge hemi is that its bore center-to-center distance - 4.1875 inches - is one of the smallest of any V-8 ever (the Ford 4.6-5.4 modular V-8 is smaller).

By comparison, a SBC is 4.40 inches, SB Mopar is 4.46, and a BB Mopar is 4.80 inches.

So all the early Dodge hemis are small-bore engines, and the small bore limits its cubic inch potential.

The early De Soto hemi was also limited in size potential, just not quite as limited as the Dodge. Its 4.3125" bore center distance you will note is still less than either a small block Chevy or Mopar.

And just FYI, the Chrysler 331-354-392 hemi had a 4.5625" bore spacing.

Thanks 413, wow that is a small bore space! I guess one should consider the Dodge hemis to be small blocks, actually. I guess i can live with that..lol I did ask Hot Heads about this today and he wrote back that i could have the crank welded and offset ground but that it would be more cost effective to just start with a bigger ci motor in the first place. He said the 325 "can hold its own" with any motor. So if i decided to use it, i wont try to make it any bigger than it already is..and I agree, a 3.8 stroke is already pretty long! Thanks again for all the good info.

The convert has its original 241 Red Ram hooked up to a Gyro-Torque transmission. The car was put into storage by the original owners in 1965 because of a transmission problem. I got it from their family this fall. Am working on getting the engine running before attacking the tranny. Hope to have it on the road this spring. Plan to drive it a year to sort out the bugs before starting restoration.

My first car (bought in 1966 - one year after the convert was put in storage) was a 53 Coronet sedan. I would have remembered seeing a convert in the years since, but didn't, nor have I talked to anyone who had. I've searched the internet & only found 4 others. Two are in collections (a red on in AZ or NV and a blue one in FL?), an unrestored black one in CA and the body of one being parted out, forget where. There are undoubtedly more around (4100 were built), but it has to be a pretty rare car.

that would be me, sorry if it's messed anyone up. the problem is that the pics are too large and have been having trouble with the iMac posting them as attachments. when i make an attempt, i test it right away and if it doesn't come up, i delete it before anyone wastes their time. The iMac doesn't allow me to resize the photo (in iPhoto), so i'm trying to email to my computer at work and back here. the email process does allow reduction in photo size. i was about to make another attempt.

I'm running a Mallory. I initially tried a MSD, but the intake manifold extended back too far to slide the distributor in. With smaller diameter, the Mallory makes it in, but not by a whole lot. I'm happy with the tri-power set up. One aspect of it is the visual, it just looks cool on a Hemi. Performance-wise, it's better when I nail it in first (rolling) or from a stop, but if I open all six at about 70 or so, it's less impressive. Just an adjustment issue, I haven't hit the right combination yet. The carbs are Rochester, they're all functional. As a lot of you already know from your own experience, the real fun is in the driving.
It's never been on a dyno, but the best guess is I'm getting about 310-315 hp. And with the total weight of the car just under 3000 lb., it does all right.

315 hp out of a 241 ?? did you have custom high compression pistons made? with stock pistons 7.1 compresion,,factory hp is 140 with a 2 bbbl., i think it would be very hard to double thet hp with out bigger compression

The pistons were custom-made by JE pistons, c.r. is 10 to 1, cam reground by ISKY (i think 270 deg., don't remember lift), balanced, ported, sanderson headers, align-bored, and overall displacement due to .030 over is about 244. Interesting story about the pistons is that since nobody made custom forged-aluminum pistons for this engine, the engine builder had to make clay impressions of the cylinder head so JE could proceed.

that's for eight. if it had been for ten, the other two would have been made into trophies. at least it would seem like more of a bargain that way. As to the cam, luckily it was good enough to be reground by Isky Cams. Here's another interesting story by the shop that did the engine; Ol' Ed Iskendarian himself, now retired, sometimes still likes to come in the shop and run through some cams. When mine came in, supposedly he reground it.
Don't know if it's true, but makes for a fun story.
Just to clarify; the engine builder was in Lansing, MI and sent the cam out to Isky,

This is from a work order Jan '02, so i can't say if the company info is still valid. Anyway JE Pistons,15312 Connector Lane, Huntington Beach, Calif. You might be able to reference what they did for me with the job order #298446. The phone number shown is (714)898-9763. They also show a piston part # of 196722. Maybe it's a guy thing, but those pistons were just beautiful.
The piston weight is 445 grams, and as mentioned before, comp. ratio is 10 to 1. The cam was reground by Isky Cams for 270 deg. duration and .465 lift. For grind, they show '270-Mega'
