Was going to try for a new best today,,,DA was very good,,,so we headed to Beech Bend for some racing....

First pass was fine,,,in fact,,,got a 1.41 60',,,they were only running 1/8 mile today,,,,and the car seemed ok...

Second run,,,normal burnout....but felt like it spun hard off the line,,,,,pulled second,,,,and BANG,,,,,felt like someone was hitting the underside of the car with a hammer...pulled over quick,,,and shut it off.....

Fire coming out of the passenger side collector,,,,nothing under the hood,,,,,put out the collector,,,,nothing major....

I thought i broke the rear end.... the driveshaft was still intact,,,and no leaks anywhere under the car,,,,,towed back to the trailer,,,,winched it up,,,and got home....

Pulled the valvecover's,,,and this is what i see...oil/water mixture coated on the inside,,,,,

Checked the rockers,,,,and note,,,i am now MISSING 4 pushrods,,,,they are gone....

Pulled the intake and valley pan off,,,,,,stuff all over the place,,,total carnage....

(lifter broken in half,,,rod bolts,,,part of a rod,,,shrapnel,,,lifter bore broke off,,,and the middle of the cam is GONE.....with the center portion of the block blown out....

missing cam...

I was "thinking" of a 572 at somepoint in the future....but wasnt planning on doing it this way....

Still have to pull the motor,,,and the heads,,,and see what they look like,,,,,
I hope i didnt trash the heads as well.....

Dang Doug, REAL sorry to hear/see that. Do you have any guesses what let go first? I'd guess a rod.

Sorry to hear about the loss of the motor. At least it did it at the end of the year rather than the beginning.

Doug, just built a killer 500 motor with mega block, 440-1's, you can have it cheap. 722 hp, if you need one.

Sorry to see that.I have been there before. I broke a rod in the lights at 127 mph in '95. I was able to salvage one cylinder head, the intake and carburetor and balancer.

Ouch, that sucks man Looks like it pitched a rod, then sawed the cam in half. At least you didn't oil down your slicks and hurt the car or yourself.

I was glad it wasnt worse at the track, ,,especially after looking at the amount of damage inside,,,,the car didnt leak a drop,,and i shut it off ASAP when it started coming apart and pulled over.....

I'll pull the heads tomorrow to have a look,,,,and pull the rest of the motor/trans later this week,,,,more pic's to follow...

Code Red, Doctor Doug, scrub up. . Sorry about the loss, Doctor.

Hate hearing the news , Doug. Sorry. At least you did not hurt or damage the car, driving through oil. Might be time for a Koleno block. Sorry again.

Ouch. That hurts. As said, glad it all stayed in the engine, and at least it wasnt a mega $$$ aftermarket block, if you want to look on the bright side.

Sorry to see that Doug, I know first hand what you are feeling right now. Once you get into the engine let us know what you find and if anything sticks out as to what may have caused this. Glad to see you and the car are ok after something like that.

Sorry for the loss of the motor, but like the other guys said, happy you didn't oil your slicks and wreck. A guy did that last year at Muncie Indiana and took out the timing display with his Studebaker. He was hurt some, but the car was a total loss from the pics I saw. I plan on using an engine diaper when I get my Dart done, to hopefully stop the wrecking part if it grenades.

Best of luck on the new build.

Sorry to hear this Doug! Even Whitey has tears in his eyes! Glad to hear you and the '65' are OK! Coulda been REAL bad. A 572 does sound mighty tempting, doesn't it? Hope the heads are unscathed, and re-usable in the future! Best of Luck with your future build! Take care, buddy! Randy

Sorry to hear it.

I expect at least a few valves are bent when the cam got broke (by the rod?). Hopefully that is all the head damage.

Ouch Doug that's ugly.............

You learn that at "Bubbas School of Engine Destruction"?

Glad you and the car weren't hurt, heck of a way to convince the wife you need a new engine though.

that's a shame. it seems like the Moparts guys have seen a lot of rod failures this season. on the bright side, no injuries came out of it and it came at the end of the season. you'll have all winter to get a new combo together.

That sucks Doug. At least you have all winter to build the new motor.

Wow Doug, sorry to hear about this. As many others have said at least the damage was contained in the motor and you didn't get oil under the car at speed.

Ooopps! I guess that answers the question of how long that old engine will last. There is no telling how many hundreds of passes were on those rotating parts. Bobby had 5 hard years on them before Doug bought the car. I would take a very conservative guess and say Bobby had well over 500 passes on it before Doug took over.

The rods were Eagle. Stock 440 steel crank. Stock 440 block with ARP main studs. No main girdle unless Doug added one a couple of years ago when he freshened the engine. Also, no concrete or filler when we originally built the engine.

I don't mean to jinx it, but I'd bet that there is some major destruction when it is all said and done. I'm really surprised that it didn't window the block. I'm really curious to see how the main webs held up as well.

Hey Doug! If you would be willing to get rid of any scrap pieces that you don't want or can't use, I'll take them off your hands. I like showing my Auto Tech students what happens when things come apart.

Bobby had 5 hard years on them before Doug bought the car. I would take a very conservative guess and say Bobby had well over 500 passes on it before Doug took over.

I am pretty sure i put about 50-75 runs after i bought the car from Bobby,,before i went thru the motor,,and about another 300 plus passes after the motor was redone in 2006 until now ,and got the car to run 10.26 @ 130MPH with a 1.40-1.41 60',,,

The rods were Eagle. Stock 440 steel crank. Stock 440 block with ARP main studs. No main girdle unless Doug added one a couple of years ago when he freshened the engine. Also, no concrete or filler when we originally built the engine.

I had the motor re-done in 12/2006,,ie clean block, magnaflux, hone, new cam bearings, freeze plugs, line hone, rings, bearings, oil pump, gaskets, crank polish, new cam, lifters, and had the E heads ported, and bumped the compression up to 13:1 The pistons, block and rods were re-used

I don't mean to jinx it, but I'd bet that there is some major destruction when it is all said and done. I'm really surprised that it didn't window the block. I'm really curious to see how the main webs held up as well. I was lucky,,,NO leaks,,nothing,,,i thought i broke the rear end,,,not the motor,,

Hey Doug! If you would be willing to get rid of any scrap pieces that you don't want or can't use, I'll take them off your hands. I like showing my Auto Tech students what happens when things come apart. I'll let ya know,,,,you might have to make a road trip to Louisville, overall it's been a really good motor for what it is/was,,440 .030, foot brake,,etc

Doug,

Man, that's tough, looks like a rod bolt let go, turned the cap loose, and did the damage to the inside of the block, if the rod cap had stayed hooked to the rod, it would have for sure took out the side of the block.

Hate that it had to happen, but things like this
are going to take place, sooner or later, with the damands we put on these engines.

Dave

Stock 440 steel crank.

I had the motor re-done in 12/2006,,ie clean block, magnaflux,

Sorry to see the destruction. Close to 900 race passes on a factory crank is a lot. Interesting that it magnaflux checked with no hairline cracks at the 2006 rebuild (~575 runs).

Still it seems rod related (bolt, bearing, etc).

Doug, just built a killer 500 motor with mega block, 440-1's, you can have it cheap. 722 hp, if you need one.

Hey you want to send that motor on an all expenses paid holiday to Australia.722 would be awesome.Might need to lend a gearbox and a diff.
