Thought I'd share with you the work on my 66 Barracuda. I bought it localy about a year & a half ago. Car apparently came from New Jersey orginaly. Now in NC. Biggest project i've taken on yet. Will need some encouragement along the way. It want be a rotiserie, but I still want it to look as nice as I can. Its the dark green car in the pic. Gold car is an allready striped parts car with not much left.

Back window was cracked badly & was leaking a lot of water when it rained. In fact the day I went to look at the car ir was raining & I watched the water run in. The car was full of parts so I was not able to get a good look at the floors, but I expected it was bad. I was able to get the rear glass off the parts car. So far the only thing I've used from it.

Trunk floor looks pretty good, other than a lot of surface rust. I began grinding it al down to the bare metal with a wire wheel on a drill. Vacumed it all up & wiped it down with laqure thinner. Then applied several coats of rattle can primer. I think it will be ok. There where a few very small holes it the spare tire well. After getting it down to the metal & primering it I filled those with 3M seam sealer. Seems to have worked.

More grinding, priming of the trunk area. You can see on the rear floor section under the glass. It has a lot of pits. This piece is removeabe & I figured my parts car one may be in better shape. However I decided to use this one since it will be covered with carpet. I took it down to bare metal. Primed it good with several coats & time between coats. It was the wet carpet that did this I'm sure.

While the old broken rear glass was out. I cleaned up the channel down to bare metal. I primed it with rattle can epoxy primer. I also decided on the color I wanted to aint the car. Its a late model Chrysler color. Called Flame Red or Poppy Red. Very popular on Rams, PT's, Mini Vans. I got that color from a Dart that was in Mopar Muscele. It was a similar color with black carpet & black & white interior. Looked good in the mag so I went with it. So I began trimming it out with Dupli Color rattle can as well. Also removed the metal bolt in floor section under the glass to paint it. Every thing looked good underneath so since it will be covered I left it the factory green.

Rear glass from the parts car installed. I got the new gasket from The Paddock. Good price & timely delivery. However we (had friend who's done glass work before help on this) had a hard time with the gasket. It was very soft & fit pretty loose. Had to tape it on so it wouldn't fall off when we turned the glass over to install it. Got it on, but it was tough.

Saw an add on Craigslist for a 65 Barracuda parts car not to far away. Went to check it out. I dont like the front end styling of the 66 & since this is a resto mod I want to use a 64/5 front clip. So this car would help there.

$500 bucks later & the "new parts car " is home. Its rough too & I think I paid too much. However it was close by & had some of the stuff I will need. Lots of thanks to my buddy Mike Miller who taged along. It was raining buckets in the wet old junk yard. The car didnt have a rear end under it either. Somehow we got it loaded???

Went back to work on the 66. Sanded down the tail panel section. Primed with Dupli color rattle can epoxy. Removed both bumpers & brackets too. The tail panel is creased in. Going to have to try to pull it out. Maybe a little hammer & dolly work as well.

Looks like you're making some good progress. There is a local Challenger painted that color of red and it's of my favorite cars at the local shows. It really stands out nicely. Great color. Look forward to seeing more progress pics. I restored the 65 in my sig with my Dad in the mid 80s. It was in Wilmington, NC. It needs a full resto now but will have to wait until the Challenger is done. Your post makes me look forward to starting on it. Joe

The gasket should have gone on the body and then you install the glass into the gasket based on the pic you posted.. Should be a filler type of strip that goes in the gap on the outside of the gasket

Got a lot done on the car today. Got the engine & trans out. Sitting on the shop floor. Also got the master cyl out as well as removed al of the rest of the under hood A/C stuff. I had to break one metal hose as I just could not get it to release. I tried everything I know. It was slowly bending so I decided to just let it go. Plan on new ones anyway just wanted to remove as much as I can with out damage for reference.

A look at the engine bay. Dont know what I will put back in it yet. Got lots of time to think about that. 5.7 Hemi would be sweet, but I think thats a bear of a job. The old 318 had 11/75 stamped on the side. It had two bad looking freeze plugs & the oil smeals burnt. If I decide to use it I hope its ok.

Got a chance to work on the Barracuda this weekend. Got the windsheild out & the dash assembly. The windsheild was not so bad. The dash took ver an hour & I tried to take it out with all the wires still attached the the gauges & switches. Have been watching several other post on this board & others & have seen a few guys do this. Look like the way to go. Well on this car there must be a better way. I thought I had everything loose & would start to pull the dash up & out only to find 1 more wire connected way up under in a hard to get at place. This car has A/C so it pretty compact under there. Evern the wiper motor was up in there hidden. So early A body guys feel free to clue me in on things I should have done differently. And how is the best procedure to reinstalling it all.

Next will be the HVAC box then the e-brake, wiper motor & linkage. Going to leave the steering column in for now in case I need to move the car around. It too will get rebuilt & painted.

It's coming along nicely. I took the dash out of the Challenger but have never taken the one out in my 65 Barracuda. But I will need to when I get to it so I'm taking some notes. Keep up the great work and keep the pics coming! Joe

Got a little done on the car today. My buddy came over to supervise. Got the HVAC out finaly. Shifter, wiper motor & related linkage/pivots. All in about 2 to 2 1/2 hours for those taking notes. Some of the stuff was already loose. I took some notes as well to help reinstalation & anyone else who may work on one of these cars.

The put the wiper motor up under the dash. Probably not a big deal on a non-a/c car. However on an a/c car its really hidden.

This pic you can see I have it loose. However there are two (2) wiring connections here (circled) that you need to disconect. With the dash out of the way & the wiper motor unbolted it was no problem.

This vacumn hose works its way along the firewall & over the box. It was clearly visable with everything out of the way.

Ok this is a time saver tip. I thought I had the box loose & ready to come out. I gently tugged on it & it moved out quite a bit. In fact the left side was out. Something was still holding the upper right side. Got my light out & was looking all around & spotted this long rod. It runs down throught the box & has a small bolt that retains it. The top of the rod loops over like a hook over the inner body. All you need to do it loose the lower retaining bolt (dont remove it)& lift up on the box so the rod will unhook & out it will come.

The rod runs all the way to the bottom of the box. As seen here.

Pull the hoses through the firewall as you remove the box. This car has 3. Its easy. Just be sure to check them on the other side before to make sure they ar not tangled.

Here is a dealer emblem that was on the car. I remember seeing something indicating the car came from New Jersey. There was some stuff from California also in the car. As well as some military dog tags. Anyone know of this dealer. It would be nice if they where still around & could share any information they have about the car. I also think it would be neat to install a new emblem from this dealer if they where in fact the original selling dealer.

Got a chance to work on the Barracuda some this weekend. No major work just still dismantaling. Was able to get both rear windows & regulators out. Some trim off too. There is one iece that fits up under the roof where the door glass joins. It was dry rotted & kinda hard on spots & brittle in others. I removed both sides of it. There are screws under the rubber weatherstrip for those taking notes. You have to pull the old weatherstrip off to access the screws.

The very first screw at the front is visable through a seam or layer in the weatherstrip. The rest are hidden behind it.

Once the weatherstip is out of the way you can easily access the retaining screws. I assume the weatherstrip is all you buy when you replace it. Just sticks back on to the chrome strip. It also has a thin piece of foam between it & the cars roof. It too needs to be replaced. I have been checking on parts as I remove stuff to make sure is avaliable. Did not check on this so I hope someone sells a good replacement.

Have been a little busy working on a few other things. Yet I have done a little work on the 66. I removed all the wiring. Only thing still attached to the car is the rear end, front suspenson & steering column. Going to leave it that way for now so it will remain mobile. It has been raining a lot here for several months & has finaly stopped so I was able to get parts car #2 jacked up so I could remove the front clip eaiser. Ground was still wet. I am putting a 65 nose on her as I like the styling better. It was in worse shape than I thought. Both have rust holes behind the headlights. I can probably fix that. 1 has the lower section completely rotted. Can fix that if I can find a patch panel. 1 has a nice dent that may be tough to fix. The front valence panel was bent up badly, but I could see that without removing it so thats ok. I have leads on some good fenders. 1 local & one a hundred miles away. May try to fix these. Not sure what to do yet. I need to get wrorking on my bracket car. The season is approching & I had some things I wanted to do to it. So it may be a while before much is done to the 66. Anyway here are some pic's of the ratty fenders.

Well finaly got a chance to work on the Barracuda a bit. Its been a few months. Not that I have been goofing off. Been hard at work on other things & the Barracuda kinda got in the back of the line. So I decided I would attack some of the rust areas. This spot is on the lower left (drivers) quarter just in front of the wheel. It has rust through. I sanded it down with a paint stripper wheel to the bare metal so I could see where I needed to cut out. Also after removing the paint the body has quite a lot of dimples in the area just above the rust through. Looks like someone tap a hammer all around.

Here I have it all sanded down & the bad metal cut out. There was a lot of dirt & scale in side that I was able to use a vacumn & a coat hanger bent to form a scraper to help loosen it. Looked like I got it all. Took a pick of that before & after, but those pic's apparently didn't come out. I then sprayed a rust inhibitor/converter (Permatex product) to protected it. Now my thinking is to buy a panel flanger to form a flange that the patch can fit into. My welding is poor still although I have been practcing & getting better. I'm thinking about using a metal bonding adhesive also. I see there are 2 types of flangers. A simple pliers type similar to vise grips & a pneumatic type. Can anyone share some opinions on these.

Started buffing on some of the stainless trim. Did this a few weeks ago. Was time consuming, but not hard at all. First time I had ever done this. I left the piece on the car so I wouldn't have to make a holder for it. Works well if you are going to strip & repaint the car as I plan to do. It does buff the surrounding paint right off. This piece was scratched up. Still has some light swirls in it. I need to get a new wheel & hit it one more time for that final finish. Yes I know it has a nick or two, but its going to be a driver & I think it came out very good.

This is a pic of the other side for an idea of how bad the stainless was. This side has a nice bend in it & I'm not sure how to fix that. So I may have to buy another piece.
