Might be obvious when I pull it out. But I want to wire mine up again in my coronet.

Is there some isolator that wears out or how it mounts?

The spiral heating element itself has resistance to it, although not a lot compared to most other circuits.

it doesn't make (electrical) contact until you push it in all the way. When the element becomes cherry red it pops back a bit & breaks contact. Except for the controlled resistance in the heating coil it actually is pretty much a dead short for a few seconds until the element heats up & it breaks contact

I think what he means is why does the positve not just short straight to the negative, even without the element in.

Yes, there is an insulator that supports the center contact, and keeps it from contacting the outer housing. I think it's porcelyn. I think they break and fall out after a while.

Contact is made through the lighter element itself, which (as mentioned) has a resistance to it.

I think you're right. I missed that.

yeah, that is what I was wondering.

I am afraid the cig lighter in my car is causing a dead short without the element in it. And I was wondering how it was insulated.

Thanks. I guess I will see when I pull it out to be sure.
