I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi and 34,700 miles. I am having a problem with a ticking/tapping noise. This only happens when the weather is cold. When I start my truck there is NO noise. As the truck runs, you can start to hear this ticking/tapping. It starts out quiet and sounds like a lifter to me. As time goes on the noise gets louder and sounds like a really dry lifter. You can hear this noise 20-25 feet away. The noise continues until you drive the truck for a while. But if you just let it sit there and run the noise continues. I took the truck to 2 dealers and both said this is normal engine noise. The 2nd mechanic said its normal lifter noise that happens after miles are put on the engine. I had a salesman go start a similar truck with similar miles on the lot and it had no noise. I work with at least a dozen guys with same kind of truck and no noise. And I have never heard of a normal noisy lifter. Except for noise from a solid cam and this sound nothing like that. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with their truck or know of one that has. Does anyone have any ideas? I have already called Dodges customer service and waiting for a call back. I am planning on taking the truck to another dealer to get another mechanics opinion. Any help will be greatly appreciated. My warranty is up in about a week and 1000 miles. So I would be lying if I said I am not trying to get this figured out before that happens. Thank you Chris

My 03 has the "HEMI tick" 67,000 miles have not had any issues. Do a google search for hemi tick and you will get all kinds of info, I've heard everything from lifters, push rods, to the valve stems having excessive clearance. I have a buddy with a 05 and it does not make it . I would agree with the dealer that it is a normal condition. Doesn't matter any way I wouldn't want any of the bozo's around here to touch my truck, you have to pull the heads even to replace the lifters.

It is quite common amongst 5.7s. The motors do carry roller cams and all 4 of the ones that I have had, including my current 50K mile version in my Charger make some lifter noise. It is normal of these motors. They are not quiet by any means, just like the 426s. At the very least, the motor will sound like a sewing machine. There is some truth behind the idea that the valve guides are large and contributing to some of the Hemi tick, but it does not hinder performance or durability.
The 04 and ealier versions had some issues with weak valve springs breaking, but that was remidied in 2005.
The 5.7 is a very tough motor, even with its not so quiet valvetrain. I love mine.
As long as 5w20 oil is being used, it should be ok.

Same here, Dennis. When hot at 600 rpm, oil pressure is 21-23 lbs, which is perfectly fine, but since I have shut off my MDS via programmer, I do not need to worry about MDS lifter collapsing for proper cylinder deactivation function, so I am going to bump up to 5w30 in another 25K miles or so. Im at 50K right now and use Mobil 1 5w20.
