Hey guys, if you saw my other post I'm upgrading
my stock 318 to a 4 barrel MP aluminum intake.

What carbs do you guys put on this?

Holley 600 cfm or an Edelbrock AVS 500?
or..what do you guys use..

Its a stock 318 with single exhaust.
I will be upgrading to dual exhaust later on
but for now I just want to upgrade to a
small 4 barrel..

What do you guys use/recommend... thanks!

edelbrock. I'd go 600 and jet it down if you need to. The Eddys aren't a rich carb. 600 should be fine right out of the box.

600 eddy would be good for a stockish 318

I also like a early to mid 70s chivy q-jet with the mopar throttle lever tac welded on to the throttle shaft for stock mopar 4-v linkage

that works great on a 318 also,IMO

any smaller holley would do..

remember 318 are easy to "over cam" which means they are easy to "over carb" also

I have ran a 750cfm on a stock teen..had good top end..but the idle was pig rich and slow speed drivabilty was sluggish till 3000 rpms or so

600 eddy out the box was almost right on the jetting but still a tad rich,IMO

good luck and dont over carb it with a stock cam

dont forget to get the throttle presssure rod adjusted correctly or you will be posting about new trannys for it

What about the Thunder AVS 500 cfm
Is that a better choice than a 600 CFM for
a 318.... anyone use the 500?

I had a holley 600 cfm vac. secondary on my camaro and I liked it. The car was run as a daily driver, even through the winter. Tried an Edelbrock 600 on the same car, and I don't think it ran as well.

eddie 600 is a good choice as it gives some room to grow. I have a 1406 on my magnum headed 318 with a 208@.050, .506" lift roller cam, RPM air gap and headers. I had to change the step up springs to the pink or natural, jet the primary down to .095" jets and .073/.052 rods and the secondary down to .089 jets. that was tuning with an LM1.

The one I was looking at is the Holley 80457S
model which is a universal 600 CFM 4 barrel
with electric choke and vacuum secondaries.
Brand new it runs around $275.00
which seems reasonable...
(The Thunder AVS 500 is around $350.00 )

Anybody use this one (holley)?

I have to use a 1" spacer to get this to fit.
on the MP Aluminum intake...

I've got the spacer and mopar "pieces" to connect
to the existing throttle linkage...

I understand I'll have to adjust the throttle
linkage to get this to work properly.

One more question I've got a 340 single 4 barrel
air cleaner... will this fit on the holley,
it looks like it will.... But I've never tried it

Anybody know?

Don't forget to use four barrell intake gaskets not the steel shim two barrell gaskets. AMHIK. One of the first things I learned on my first mopar.

The carb choice is your preference.I would run 600 cfm what ever you choose. It won't hurt you now and will support upgrades later.
Honestly I think dual exhaust will help more than a 4 barrell.Be prepeared to re-tune it after you swap exhaust.
At a minimum I would install a high flow muffler even with single exhaust.Stock (quiet) mufflers are very restrictive.

Quiet doesn't mean restrictive, nor does loud mean best flowing.

Car Craft, and others, have done a number of tests and the Dynomay Hemi muffler is the winner. Quiet, free flowing, cheap. On the dyno, with a sound meter, real tests not someone's guess.

When you guys switch from 2bbl to 4bbl
do you retain the 5/16 stock fuel line
or do you also convert the fuel pump/ steel lines
to 3/8..

Is this part of the conversion for a stock
318 from 2bbl to 4bbl?

What do you guys do?

if you plan on keeping it under 300hp then the 5/16 fuel lines will be fine.

I agree with you but most stock mufflers I have seen are both quiet and restrictive compared to an aftermarket turbo style muffler(dynomax).
The 5/16 fuel line is sufficient.
