I have a paint chip(I think caused by guys painting my house) about the size of a pea right on the door midline on my 70 Challenger. This was a real expensive paint job and I'd like to have the chip fixed so that it will not be readily visable. Will this require the door to be reshot or is there another way to get a good repair? I'm bringing the car to the guy who did the paint work but I'd like to know what to expect and what to tell him I want done.

If it's a really nice paint job then only right way to fix it is repair the chip and repaint. Any touch up, even build it up sand it and rub it will still be noticable. Especially by you. Have the guy fix it right you'll be much happier later. If it was a big dollar paint job no since in trying to cheat now. Bite the bullet. Do it right.

There is a great how-to in an older mopar muscle magazine on how to do it.

From what I recall you clean and fill the chip level with spot putty, and then add a coat of color mixed with the normal amount of reducer followed by several more light coats while adding more reducer each time to help it melt into the surrounding paint.

This will work great for a solid color, I've touched up rock chips, etc.,for years this way. Clean it, glaze fill it, paint dab, then clear, then let set a couple of days. On a solid color, after color sanding & polishing, you can make it disappear. If it's a metallic, you really can't get away with this method. You can't dab a metallic color, the flake won't lay right, usually ends up darker. Then you repair chip, spray a blend over the repair & generally clear coat the whole panel.

In the article I believe they used a small paint gun for the whole process.

I also agree that having a solid color would make the process a whole lot easier.
