I know coils get hot, but how hot is too hot?
I was just running my starter to fill my carb with gas, and it got too hot to even hold. The car never got started. Is this normal?

Thats not normal. What coil are you running? How much voltage do you have at coil?

It's an FBO coil with the FBO ignition. How can I verify the voltage? Would it be hotter from just turning the starter than if the motor was running?
Thanks,
Jim

voltmeter + probe to + side of coil, - probe to ground

You should only have around 11.5 to 13 volts at coil during start up. If your regulator is wasted you may be pumping over 15 volts into coil. That will over heat it very quickly.

Didn't FBO recently come out w a coil that takes a full 12V? As said put your VOM on it & see what you have & holler back.

The current FBO coil can handle 8.5-11.0v. Don is working on a new coil and I got a pm from him yesterday saying that they are testing the new design.

I'm getting 8.0 volts, and it's not as hot as last night. Like I said last night, I had the motor spinning for a total of 8 seconds probably over a dozen times with brakes to check and fix gas leaks in my fuel line while I got the carb full of gas. Will the coil get hotter if the motor is spinning like this without running?

Yes because you send full battery voltage to the coil while cranking the engine

If you've changed it recently double check the wiring.
