The tranny in my 92 Cummins is slipping in OD. I have a spare 518 out of a gas truck that is waiting to go in the hot rod.

I tore down the OD section of the spare tranny and it looks good. It's a little later unit judging by the lock up converter and 5 gear OD planetary. The OD section looks great inside.

Would it be possible to transfer the steels and clutches from the spare tranny into the truck's tranny? Are there any interchange issues?
I haven't torn down the truck yet. I'm on a pretty tight budget so if this will keep it going until I can go through the transmission properly, I'd sure like to do it.

I'd love to fix it for the price of a gasket, especially since I would not have to remove the transmission to do so.

I really hope so but am not 100% sure. I am going the other way, putting a diesel overdrive section behind a gas tranny. Wanted the heavier duty OD since it's going in a 1 ton 85 Crew Cab for towing. If nothing else, here is a bump for you Kevin.

Kevin , I think the truck OD has one more clutch than the gas job , if it doesn't then yes you can swap them .

I think the gas A518 (46RH) has 8 double sided frictions and 7 steels, and the Diesel (48RH) has 23 single sided frictions.

My service manual says the '92 diesel transmission has 5 discs and 6 steels for the overdrive clutch and 8 discs with 9 steels for the overdrive direct clutch.

I know the diesel governor has a heavier weight for low speed shifts.

I think I'm going to give it a shot but only after my club's car show this weekend.

The 48RH is a 2004(2003.5??) up trans , but 23 frictions ??

you might want to swap in that govenor then , or at least don't do any WOT shifts .

I'll have to dig out my manual and see what the difference is , I know there are more clutches in the OD DIRECT

It won't shift WOT if the gov's are diff. The gov in the injection pump will pull the fuel out and the rpm's will stay put and you won't gain speed, you'd have to back out of the throttle to shift and then get back in it, but you probably figured that one out already.

I will use the diesel governor in the diesel tranny. The only differences I can find in the manual are one extra disc and steel in the clutches.

I wonder if the heavier weights of the diesel governor were used in a gasoline 46RH to force lower rpm shifts,
whether the city driving MPG would go up?
