Great work Dmerc. I've always had a feeling Tquads had potential. That cam is probably helping too. Does it run clean under 2000rpm?

Can't wait to see your before and after vacuum advance numbers too.

Is your comp ratio 10.5 or 8.5 to 1.

I've cracked 20 also. My 87 Ram, reg cab, shortbox has a 5.9 Magnum, 670 Holley, M1 dual plane, short headers. Then a 5 spd manual w 0.73 od and 3.55 gear and a 28" tire. Straight highway at just under 70 mph has returned 23 mpg. I'm pretty sure aero dynamics is my biggest roadblock in the quest for mileage.

Car idles like a stocker with that cam. calculated compression is 10.5 to 1 but that is a lot different than the dynamic(Actual)compression. The dynamic effective comp ratio is 8.5 to one
The 700R4 trany does have a lock up converter and I haven't really beat on it so only time will tell how well it will hold up. They aren't know for great strength but my goal was to build a quick hotrod not a race car. I'll get it to the track soon. Using very conservative HP numbers it should run 13's at 5000 ft (if the trany doesn't explode!)Forgot, I'm also running the M1 dual plane manifold. It's a perfect match for my set up.

What is the advantage of running a 700R4 as opposed to a Chrysler OD transmission that wouldn't require an adapter?

I'm guessing it won't fit in the tunnel without modifications?

Just curious. Thanks.

PS - great job on the gas mileage!

Well, for one thing I already had a good 700R4 and from everything I read the tunnel would have to be modified with the Chrysler OD trany. I did have to make a small dent in my tunnel for clearance and fab up a new transmission mount.

Well I have always heard a chrysler auto would not fit with out floor surgery but a couple weeks ago we had a mopar show and a guy had a 518 in a 68 cuda, he said he did not cut or bend the floor, he said he ground a few bosses off that were not important and fabed a trans mount. From inside it looked like there were no floor mods and the trans was not hanging low or anything so he may have been telling the truth I could definately tell it was a 518 so I will check and see if I can stuff an A-500 in mine.

You'll really like the overdrive if you can get it in there. Your original gas mileage post is what inspired me to build a car that would get great gas mileage and still have some hit.

Thanks, I don't know what to expect for miledge with it with the new 414 stroker, I am hopeing for mid 20s in ideal conditions. The big thing about if I put the OD in it is it will actually be displaceing less air at cruise then the 318 so mabey high 20s with the OD.

The formula I use is .69 (OD Ratio) X 414 = 286 inches per driveshaft revalution. The old motor was 323 inches per dirveshaft revalution. Friction should be lower and less air will be pumped so it should do less work inside it self. On the down side I will have more overlap witch I think is a big no-no in a mpg build.

I had to modify my tunnel, definately will not fit in 74 Dart. I used 1 1/4" round tube for the new upper torsion bar crossmember. I now have a slight bulge on the passenger side of interior, should not be noticable once carpet and seat are in.

Is this buldge in the floor something a hammer can take care of?

No it has to be there for clearance. Measure the width of a 727 tail housing where it passes through the crossmember and then compare to a 518. Big difference. You have to make the tunnel wider at this point. I have seen pictures of guys using square bar, looked too boxy and they really had to cut into the floor, the round bar is a little less intrusive. Good luck!
