Did some tweaking on my new Thermoquad. Car runs really well. Can't wait to get the vacuum advance hooked up. Maybe 25 MPG is possible? Car is my 408 Duster you see in my sig.

awesome work. i see you also have an OD trans. i bet that really helps. the 700R4 has pretty good ratios if i'm not mistaken.

Yup The overdrive trany really helps and the carb is a perfect match. Good mileage on the 340 too. I think high compression motors can get some good mileage mine is 10.5 to one and the dynamic compression is right at 8.5

What rear gear are you running?

BTW the OD ratio in the 700R4 is not as good as the .69 OD in an A-500 or 518.

I was curious how you got the 700r4 onto the magnum 408? Adapter? Who makes it?

Isn't Keisler doing that swap? I know they did an automatic setup.

There are a few Mopars running around with that tranny. It usually causes a stink around here due to the non-Mopar origin.

Many companies sell the adapter plate for this, TCI is one of them.

I'm running a 3.23 rear end. The overdrive on the 700R4 is .70

Yeah, i don't understand that. This is about hotrodding, experimenting and learning. I like all brands. They all have something to contribute IMHO. By the way, really like your car!

any idea if that same adapter will also work
for the new six speed 6L80 automatic too?

Used a Wilcap adapter. The engine is a quench design with a .508 lift mild 4X4 grind cam. Makes over 400ft/lb of torque at 2000 RPM. Using regular Mopar ignition. Engine is a stroked Roller cam. Opened up the bowls in the heads and blended the transition. Stock valve job. 340 HP manifolds and TTI 2 1/2 exhaust system. Spins the 275/60-15 tires pretty easy

The thing I never liked about the 700R4 is the big ratio spread between 1st and 2nd. The 2004R had a much better ratio spread throughout all the gears. Man, can't wait to get my 440 518 Dart rolling!!!

Actually the biggest jump is 3rd to 4th. I had to put a lower stall converter in because the car would spin through first, hit second and keep spinning. With a big engine you don't notice the first to second jump at all. Your set up should be sweet. Wait till you hit overdrive. It will put a big smile on your face

Impressive

the 408 Magnum I have in my pickup has gotten as high as 17 mpg; in a 4400-lb truck that runs 13s, I'll take it!

Depends on how far you want to go. I think you have everything scienced out to a "T". All I can come up with to help you get that number is:

1. Pull the 275's off and replace with 235-70-15. They are the same height as the 275 and will get rid of a few inches of rolling resistance.

2. Put 215's or better yet 195's on the front.

3. Go 60 mph

Some more drastic measures:

4. Lock-up torque convertor.

5. Lower the car as much as practical.

6. 3.08's

Nice to see you are making progress on your project

Great work Dmerc. I've always had a feeling Tquads had potential. That cam is probably helping too. Does it run clean under 2000rpm?

Can't wait to see your before and after vacuum advance numbers too.

Is your comp ratio 10.5 or 8.5 to 1.

I've cracked 20 also. My 87 Ram, reg cab, shortbox has a 5.9 Magnum, 670 Holley, M1 dual plane, short headers. Then a 5 spd manual w 0.73 od and 3.55 gear and a 28" tire. Straight highway at just under 70 mph has returned 23 mpg. I'm pretty sure aero dynamics is my biggest roadblock in the quest for mileage.

How is that 700R4 holding up? I heard they need some help to survive behind a healthy motor in a heavier car?
