Why is there a tiny hole in the flat surface area of the thermostat? Just curious, George

Wouldn't it also allow for a vent for water expansion on a cold motor as temp approached the thermostat opening temp, to prevent higher then normal pressures? Regarding bubble venting, that would only happen on an initial coolant fill, right?
A little bit bypasses but the hole is quite small so I don't think it would make too much difference to coolant pressure. Mostly just for air I bet.
Actually on the turbo 2.2L mopar forums, drilling a hole in the t-stat is a common practice when installing a new t-stat because on those cars the head is higher than the top of the rad. There is a vent plug on the head you can back out a bit but often they are siezed so drilling a hole and putting the car up on the ramps will get the air flushed out quick.
