This item was only on cars that came with factory manual transmissions. I am looking for the correct color of the bracket that mounts dash pot to the carb. This bracket goes around where the fuel line goes into the carb. Anyone that can help me with letting me know what color it was originally, please post. The carb resto shop that redid it the last time painted it a dull silver cad color which I can almost say is wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Do you mean this bracket? In any event I can gaurantee you it's wrong if it was painted, all parts were plated, most were clear zinc/silver cad, etc. Some were gold cad/zinc but gold is much less common

Scott, yes that is the correct part. So I guess it would be the same plating as what my spark coil bracket would be then.

Here's another example, it's gold but looks to have been possibly replaced at one time or another so it's not good solid evidence, I'll know more once I get it appart. What carb # do you have?

If it was silver, yes, that's the type of plating you'd need. The problem is that most carbs have been rebuilt, and some were incorrectly plated at that time. I photograph each carb I recieve before plating (these two are examples of carbs I restored before I touched them) and try to determine if they are original or not before continuing. It's not always easy determining which color they were originally, sometimes impossible if they've already been restored somewhere else, but typically there are enough clues remaining to get it right.

Same number as the one pictured on my second post, dig under the paint or strip it with paint stripper and look for original plating remnants, a good place to look is on edges and under screws and washer overlap areas that got protected. If you find nothing I'm leaning towards gold on yours.

RJS,

Looks nice (and appears to be gold?) have any closer pics?

One thing to be cautious of is that in MANY cases, especially with carb parts, what was put on the cars on the assembly line may vary slightly (plating colors, part shapes, etc.) from over the counter/NOS replacement parts. Because of this NOS parts are not always the best ref. items.

Ok, here's a pic of another one off of the same year and part# carb as yours, it's original for sure and was originally gold. I'd say that's strong enough evidence to go with gold. That being said if I were judging your car I wouldn't deduct points for either gold or silver as I've seen both, either is possible.

RJS, in your case it seems to be just like the used factory parts I've seen.

I've seen some rebuilt carbs where the rebuilder just glass beaded the whole thing, linkages and all. It doesn't look right and also, almost imediatly starts rusting all the metal parts due to protective coating on them anymore.

You won't see that with this rebuilder

Does ANYONE have an extra bracket and dashpot? I have the lever that attaches to the throttle shaft. This is for my 440 4-speed '69 C500....

Cheers,,
Troy

PS: I've posted this in the wanted section some time ago with no success....

The biggest difficulty with dash pots is that they are not an item you can re-plate without screwing them up due to the way they are assembled. The best you can do is scrub them up and make them look as clean as possible for re-use. This is where finding a nice newer replacement or an NOS original can be the finishing touch on a top shelf carb resto.

I just dug this post up via the search feature, and like Troy, I posted an ad in the parts wanted section with no results. Scott Smith, were you able to locate one of these brackets when Troy asked about them? Would you happen to have another one or know where I could get one? Anyone else? Thanks
