Hello:
I have a fresh built 440 on my test stand that is running 80 lbs, oil pressure.I'm thinking of pulling the spring out if the oil pump and shorting it to drop the pressure. AAnybody have any experience on doing this?

Maynard

80 psi cold ? .. that is not bad. Is it a new pump? .. try an old well-used spring out of a junker pump.

It that is a cold reading it will come down when the engine and oil warms to operating temp.

Using a Hi volume pump?

Been there....

Switch to a standard one. It is a common myth that a hv pump provides better oiling. Hv pumps were designed to restore pressure in engines with excessive clearances(worn out)

A fresh engine should have a standard volume pump. The proof is your 80 psi.

Stock pumps protected most of these engines for 100000 plus miles, so it should work for you now.

High volume will simply put you against the bypass sooner. The bypass sets the max pressure. Milodon makes and adjustable unit that works very well.

Yes. and more oil through the same clearance means more pressure. That's why a HV pump improves pressure in old engines.

As mentioned, the spring is what decides the pressure. but ONLY if the pump is capable of moving enough oil to reach the spring pressure.

From my own experience, a HV pump is nothing but a waste on a fresh motor. I had a the relief stick on std pump once. It moved enough oil at just off idle, that it blew the filter up like a balloon. All this, on a motor with .003 main clearance.

I reringed a 400 a few years back, and had teh same issues as the original poster while using an hv pump. Switched to standard, no problems since.

My stock rebuild with stock pump and higher pressure spring put out 80 psi cold at idle but would drop to 65-70 warm. No biggie.

what bearings are you running in that brand new 440? OEM style half groove bearings? then yea, standard pump is all you need.

but if you're running full groove bearings that oil the journals all the time instead of just half the time, then an HV would help you out.

my big block is running an HV, and it sees 75psi cold at start up, but warm idle it's around 30. at cruise it's 65.
