a buddy has one speed shop told him it could not be rebuilt...says he could machine something but it would decrease spring pressure..is this correct?

Yes.

There was an article how to do it in a magazine a while ago.

Yes you machine some off to place the cone further down since it is worn and you shim it. Forgot who the memebr was that sold me the shims.
The down fall is as it wears it puts metal into the lube
I run the "dana power locks" with clutches but have a few cones did not want to toss them out
Even with the clutches ya have to be caefull they sell sets of clutches that are not right as well

This pertains to the 8 3/4 not the 8 1/4

Thats what I was thinking but didnt want to say b/c I dont know for sure. IIRC a few other threads have said that the suregrips from these 8-3/8 rears will drop right in. What about the gears themselves, do they transfer over as well?

the only problem i'm aware of is there was a spline change in the dakotas around 1996? so you have to swap a 95-earlier trac into the older 8 1/4.

i have 1 in a 76 8 1/4. has proven to be a sturdy unit

Auburn makes a new unit as well as Mopar Performance, both are priced from $318 for the MP unit on Summit to about $400 for the Auburn unit. With these available why bother trying to fix a worn high millage unit?

Have you run it and know it's bad or just looking to sell it as a "Rebuilt" part?

Cone type is a cone type. Just take it apart and take the 2 cones to a machine shop {some real tightwads use a belt sander} and have them remove .015"-.030" from the bottom{small}side. Then get some steel shimstock and make shims the thickness of what was removed. these shims go between the cone and the spurgear. That will not only restore the spring pressure but also get the gear mesh back to were it should be. Can only really be done once but that basicly doubles the life of the sure grip.
About the metal in the lube. Do you think it's not there on a non rebuilt/new one? If your worryed about it put a magnet in the bottom-make sure it can't get sucked up into the gears. Good luck and let the smoke roll!

You might want to rethink that , the spiders have already lost their factory preset backlash , taking material off the cone only allows them to move further away from each other , the amount of shim added had nothing to do with the amount taken off the cone , it's the amount WORN off either the cones or the case ... or both ... that needs to be restored with the shim stock .

The cone type setup is a POS design , plain and simple ...

If your on a budjet ya do the best with what ya have.
I've got cone types from the JY from a cop car with 150k on it droped it in a pickup or car and put down 2 blackies for 50$ and new gear lube. Do the best with what you got and have some fun.

Ring gear diameter makes no difference. You can still machine 0.040" off the base of the cone, then shim the side gears inward to restore the tolerances between the side gear/spider gear teeth.

Dakota (clutch style) track-locks have 29 spline side gears. You probalby need the currently unavailable 27 spline unit.
