The 4x4 trans' were T-400's made by GM with an AMC bolt pattern case. The auto trans in cars starting in '72 were made by Mopar - 904's or 727's with AMC bolt pattern cases.

the Turbo 400's were in them from the 60's up until 78ish or so, then they switched over to 727's. the dad of a friend from high school had an '80 J10 and it has a 727 in it.

'68-70(?) jeeps used buick V6's and 350's, also....pre 68's used the Nash/AMC 327's, post '70(?) used the AMC I-6's and 304/360...

Yeah, it's no wonder the parts guy at the AMC/Jeep/GMC truck dealership I worked at in the mid/late 70's was always grouchy - and CONFUSED.
