I think they put that rule in a lot of heads up classes to keep the cars looking more stock appearing. They are afraid people will show up with a pro stock type scoop or something like that and the car will look like a race car instead of a street car. The scoop I had on my car was just a standard super stock hemi scoop like what came out on the factory race hemi baracudas. I wouldn't have changed it if a nitrous backfire didn't blow it off my hood! I went with a cowl because I wanted to be able to run an air cleaner where I couldn't with the clearance of the other scoop. Also because I know that when I start winning some races they will whine about my scoop and make me change it cause its forward facing.

Food for thought.

i have a 5" cowl hood on the 'cuda and LOVE it. will never change it either. my old 6 pack hood tried to fly off the car every pass, got tired of that real quick.
and like mentioned before, none of the heads up series allow forward facing scoops, whether it's factory or not.

big pro stock scoops, snorkles, even the hemi scoops look like crap in my opinion. if it aint pro mod or pro stock, don't put a big stupid looking scoop on the hood. just my opinion.

nothing like outrunning a big tired, lexan windowed, pro stock scooped car w/ my street car

i switched from a 6 pack scoop that was sealed to the carb to the cowl hood (carb not sealed) and saw NO change in performance. did that when the car was running mid 10s.

i can barely slide my hand b/t the back of my scoop and the windshield. from what i've seen, this is how they have to fit to draw any air.
every single time i've seen an A body hood test done, the cowl hood was WAY too far off the windshield to do any good.
not calling him out or anything, but Knowsnothing's test...he lost performance from his Duster b/c his cowl hood was too far away from his windshield to work properly.
i see people mention they lost power w/ a cowl hood and just about every time it's because of that issue. CHIP

Cowl hoods or not some REALLY nice cars posted so far but personally I'd never run one regardless of the car, I simply do not think they look good on a Mopar. .

I guess I see it like this, I enjoy classic Mopar appearances, each year and model is an art form to me and when i see a nice looking example the experience is sort of ruined when something major has been changed on the body which takes away from it's original appearance, most cowl hoods dominate the front end appearances and change the lines of the car, especially some of those extra tall and wide versions that seem to throw off the geometry of the entire car. This is only compounded by the fact that so many Chevies run the same style hood, it takes away the unique flavor of the Mopars look and makes it appear adulterated in a sort of generic or diluted kind of way, tough to explain.

Does it "piss me off" as a "purist" ? No, it just doesn't look good to me that's all. I think there are some good alternatives out there if some owners were a bit more creative, I suppose running what everyone else runs is just the easy road for most guys. I really don't see them as being some kind of "end all" scoop design or anything.

I like the vintage SS look and of course the Mopars did not use a cowl. But it's up to the cars owner as what they like on their car. I just like the factory racer look myself. Ron

depends on the car, and I think so classes do not allow forward scoops. Also on a Charger it's the only scoop that looks Ok.

Billy, just for the record, I'm the new owner of your "cousins" Cuda. The 6" cowl hood was too small so it's already off! With my tunnel ram and 2 1050 dominators the carbs were too close to the hood. Instead I'm hoping to use a Pro stock style hood scoop (ie similar to DTHEMI's). But if it doesn't work out I'm upgrading to an 8" cowl scoop from AAR Quality Fiberglass just for you

Aar doesn't offer an 8" cowl hood. Glasstek would be your best bet for quality after Aar.

I have a volare with a w8 motor and the 5 inch 6 pack scoop with plenty of room for a air cleaner but I will never but a cowl on my car. so thing just doesn't go together mopar & cowl hood.dont get me wrong I see a lot of mopar with a cowl.i think I would run a g pack backwards first.lol! I did have a cowl on my durango though that was so sweet looking.

As soon as I get my hood and bumpers back from paint I will shoot pics of my 1 1/4 taller WO/RO scoop on my Coronet. I like cowl hoods on SOME cars but not all and thought long and hard about one on my car. I decided that I liked my factory style scoop better on my 67. But then again I just own a slow old street car

the question makes no sense to me.
thats like saying magnum 500 rims are are from a buick....or chevelle.
there is positive pressure in the cowl area..
forward facing scoops can create turbulance entering the carb...the velocity can be too great and disturb air flow into the carb venturi...
cowl hoods have tons of volume of pressurized air..
with out the turbulance created from a mailbox type scoope..
gmc made the most common blower back in the day....those are on mopars also....
running a cowl on a mopar is no less of a taboo than...painting it ferrari red...or covette yellow..
the least of our worries...

What is the reasoning behind a no-forward-facing-scoop rule?

because you can fabricate to create mild amounts of boost (if you will) which could be a performance advantage.
cowl hood give you the volume with less chances of creating the boost (for lack of a better word)
illbeit i know of some tesing that showed similar gains from airflow/boost from cowl type setups...
you have to change carb to account for the extra air..
just like anything it gets scienced out..
but early on ..the forward facing issue drew the red flag...fwiw

i think if you do a poll on who "likes" a cowl,[or "chevy hood" as i like to call them}, you will find most of those in the "like" column will be younger guys that weren't around when we as mopar guys were getting all the ridicule. also they weren't around when it seemed EVERY camaro and chevelle JUST HAD TO HAVE A COWL HOOD. but, this is AMERICA, and it is your car.
