The 727 in my 72 demon has marked its territory in my garage and on my driveway with transmission fluid.

After getting her up on ramps, I took a look underneath and it seems to be coming from the inspection cover and the pan gasket. The transmission pan I'm not worried too much about because thats an easy job and its not dripping from there. However its coming out pretty good on the inspection cover.

After doing some searches it looks like the front pump seal and/or bushing could be the culprit. Is it possible to replace these parts with the transmission and engine still in the car, or will I need to drop it? I did a few searches and couldn't find any info on it with the trans in the car still.

and if I were to just take it to a trans shop to do it to save some time, am I going to end up spending a grand on this thing or is it a pretty simple repair for them?

A seal and/or bushing replacement is an out-of-the-car deal only.

I would wash it down good with brake clean, remove cover and clean the bell out also and dry

clean around the dip tube and the gear selector shaft seal

then throw baby powder on all the spots and make sure its the front seal leaking

windage will move the leak around and you will waste time and $ fixing the wrong thing to just realize it still leaks

yea tranny comes out for front pump seal, the rest can be got with it in the car

thats why I suggest to clean, dry and make sure you got the right spot on the leak

whats one more day before pulling it or sending it to a shop???

check the lines as well

might get lucky

yeah I just checked and felt around the dipstick tube and its dry. Plus you can kind of see how its seeping from the inspection plate.

I know the parts are pretty cheap but any idea on labor?

Good advice, I fixed leak after leak. I think it ended up being 5-6 different spots. Once I added up all the cost of tranny fluid and parts, had over $200 into it. Let me tell you, really no way to tell where it's coming from unless you do as suggested above.

I'd clean it up and do all the stuff at once.

It could just be fluid comming out of the vent at the top of the pump? Make sure the trans is not overfilled. This is why it is common to plug the vent and re-locate it.
if not the vent issue, and it is in the converter bellhousing, you will have to remove the transmission from the car to fix it. I have seen a few torque converter hubs crack, and really leak alot of fluid.
About the only items I think you can check/fix with the trans installed would be the fluid level, the converter drain plug (if it has one), and maybe the plug for the front band lever pivot pin?
If it is not any of the issues above, then the only remaining seals in the bellhousing are the pump to converter seal, and the pump to case gasket/seal (and pump bolt washer/seals.)

Do the baby powder thing. Lot's of places these things can leak.

Well I mean since this just started happening not too long ago and I've not put any fluid in the trans lately I dont see how it could overflow unless maybe somethings clogged somewhere else but i dunno about that.

I just hope I don't have to remove my longtubes. Its not dropping the trans that bothers me its the headers haha

How high am I going to have to lift the vehicle to have enough room to get a regular jack with a transmission adapter underneath there and be able to drop the trans on it and slide it out?

Would I be able to lift it with just a regular jack and jack stands? Or would I have to get some truck jack stands to lift it higher?

you can stack up a couple of 2x6's and put your stands on that.
even If I don't need the clearance I do it anyway for the comfort

GET a pair of 6 ton jack-stands. They are much sturdier.

oh can I do this just by jacking up the front, or will it be a lot easier with all four wheels off the ground?

I do mine on ramps and stands with just a floor jack and 1/2" piece of ply wood the size of the pan

got man handle it some on the jack, but I have done lots of them

slide the tranny off the jack and slid it from under the car

a little c-clamp on the bell will help hold the tc in place going back in also

make sure you get the tc fully engauged when going back in...very important, will but the lugs on the pump if its not engauged fully

good luck and safty first with the jack/stands

thanks for the tips so far. I had the UV dye so I put that in the trans and it was indeed coming from the inspection cover so I pulled the trans.

Now when I removed the seal it was kind of hard to tell if that was the cause. I'd like to think it was but since it was mentioned that the bushing could be problem, I'd like to be sure before putting the trans back it.

Is there anything I should look for when inspecting this bushing? Any tell-tale signs I should be looking for. Oh and to clarify, this is the bushing that the converter fits into correct (right behind the front seal)?

did the UV dye show leaking from the seal area?
since it is out, check the converter snout for cracks.

Yes there was definitely a trail leading from the seal area.

No cracks on the snout however there is some significant wear on it where it would presumably sit against the bushing (can see some bronze showing through in some parts). And if you run your finger over it you can tell where the groove starts if your eyes were closed.

Sounds like alot of wear? How many miles on the trans/converter? If it is fairly low mileage you may want to check the bellhousing alignment, or a cracked flexplate.
