Fuel sender doesnt read correctly on the dash. When full the needle will just bounce around from Empty to Full. When I burn off a little gas it will just sit right on E. Where do I start with trying to get this fixed before I have to pull the tank? I have a full tank so I'll have to burn off some gas before I do that. Also, new senders are either $100 bucks or $87 depending on which one you need, anything I do to my current one to fix it will be useful.

Thanks

you have a part time open & with the above consistent symptoms when you're down far enough on gas pull the sender & see if anything looks out of whack & ohm it thru its travel.

I'll pick up an ohm meter by the time my fluid level drops and get to work.

Could be corrosion on the grounding-strap (Note: strap usually clips onto the sending-unit outlet tube and the steel fuel line beyond the rubber connection) causing the intermittent.

The float could be compromised (if hollow-brass type, partially full of fuel,) wiring or bad-connection, bad gauge, or sending-unit.

Good luck with it. I need to address a similar issue on my '79 CJ5 Jeep, sending-unit on top of tank means I need to drain / drop the tank out to access it.

Ohm meter can be used to diagnose.

Good point on the ground. Might run a long jumper wire from the metal nipple on the sending unit all the way up directly to the battery negative post because if it's an intermittent ground problem this'd save you from going inside.

Id say it the resistor in the sender. They arent very good new and after 40 years even worse.I did the one in my 65 in Stainless 3/8 it was like 70 bucks. Its not dead on but its real close.Usually if the ground is bad its bad.I just clamp a 14 gauge wire to mine and attach it to the floor.Better than the factory strap.Rocky
