Hey guys, I have a 72 Duster with a 318/a-833OD transmission. Instead of building up the 318 I'm thinking about a 360. I found a good running 360 out of a 1987 Dodge Ram pickup with 57,000 miles on it for $300, seems like a good deal.

Question is will this engine bolt right up to my 4 speed, it was hooked to an auto? Are there diferent motors for standard and suto, and how can I tell? If so can I use the flywheel off the 318, or am I going to have to buy some stuff for the swap?

I've always been an auto guy, this is my first stick so I'm learning as I go. Any info would be great, Thanks

Also anyone know what the HP/TQ and compression of these motors are? I'm looking at finding a running 360, swaping in a good cam and swaping over the Edelbrock intake, 650 Holley, and headers off my 318. I figure its a better rought then trying to work up the 318 any more, seeing as I can do more with it in the future.

If the crank in the 360 is drilled for the pilot bushing then it should work.

Not sure about the 87's but usually 360's are externally balanced so I doubt the 318 flywhhel will work. I could be wrong though.

The nice thing is that year 360 will have factory roller lifters. Don't forget to install the pilot bushing... I may have done that once and had to pull the engine out to put it in.

Ok Like I said I'm new at this manual transmission thing, always autos. So whats the pilot bushing and how do I know if the crank is drilled for it or not? Time to go pick up a manual tranny book!!!!If the crank has a hole in the center rear its good or are there different sizes. Also if its not drilled for it, then is the crank just solid in the rear?

So the crank has to be drilled for the pilot bushing and I would have to pick up a new externally ballanced flywheel for a 360, will my clutch setup work or is that going to be different from 318-360?

Thanks

first off,, not al 87 360s have roller cams. I have 2 87 360 truck engines and neither are roller cammed.
If the crank is not drilled, you can use a later style pilot bushing. You will need to cut about a 1/2 off the input shaft.
Send your 318 flywheel to a machine shop and have it balanced for the 360, much cheaper than buying a new one unless yours is bad.
a 360 pass side motor mount is needed as the ears on the block are wider.
the rest of you exhisting stuff will be ok.

I am truckless..

He would actually need to use a pilot bearing from a mid-90s application. Not a bushing.

As for the motor mount, it is the drivers side that is different....not the passenger side

No 360s had rollers until 89.

Thanks for the info, I'm having the guy send some pictures to see if its drilled or not before taking an unneeded trip.

So will it be solid if its not drilled for the pilot bushing?

And any idea what it would run at a machine shop to get the 318 flywheel balanced for a 360. And would they know where and how much weight to add, is there anywere online that has the specs. A machine shop or a tranny shop?

Last, would the clutch and flywheel for a 318 be the same size for a 360?

Thanks

oh, good to know.
They are machined for the factory roller lifters... just got to put them in, cheap too (compared to retro fit)

All cranks are drilled to allow the nose of a torque convertor to fit into the end, but not all cranks are drilled deep enough to allow the input shaft of a manual transmission to fit. If not drilled deep enough, some people remove 3/4" of the input shaft, use the late model roller bearing, and call it good.

There is a diagram floating around (you could probably Google it) which has the measurements of how to do just this. A 1-13/16" drill bit is required, IIRC. Might be easier to buy a 360 flywheel.

They can both use the 10-1/2" clutch.

Here's a pic of the roller bearing sitting in the TC register in the back of my '77 360 crank:

The end of the crank with the flexplate still in place:

In the above pic you can see the smaller diameter bore hole, into which the brass bushing fits. If your crank is drilled deep enough, you can use either the brass bushing or the bearing which fits in the TC register.

Here are the flywheel and late model bearing in place:

Wow, thanks alot for the info and pictures, it all makes sense now. Last question is, how deep does the hole in the crank need to be for a standard pilot bushing, so I can measure when I check it out?

I would not even bother running the stock brass bushing if I wasn't 100% certain the hole was drilled both deep enough and reamed for the bushing. Just run the pilot bearing, that will fit ALL cranks, auto or manual. And trimming a small amount off the tip of the input shaft will hurt nothing.

'85 is the first year for roller cams in 318's (cars only)

318 trucks got the roller block, but used flat tappets until they switched to TBI ('88). 360's didn't go roller until '89.

the 318's flywheel will need to be balanced to 360 specs

IIRC if the crank isn't drilled for a pilot bushing, there's a pilot bushing you can buy that fits in the converter register, not sure if you then need to cut a little off the tranny input shaft or not.

and you can reuse your drivers side 318 mount, since the ears are narrower than on the 360, you may need longer bolts, and will need to stack ~ 3/8" worth of washers to make up the difference.

Not quite, it will not fit the early (66 and down?) cranks with the smaller register for the torque converter.

Don't be the exception.

Excellent info guys, thanks. Not interested in the roller cam anyway, it would just cost more to swap the cam and lifters.

So I'm either gonna look for a used 360 flywheel which I know are hard to find, or just have my 318 flywheel balanced to 360, if I decied to go with it. Thanks again, you guys are great!!!!!

roller lifters can be reused, and the cam reground. I have less in my reground roller cam than I'd have in a new flat tappet hydraulic cam/lifter combo.
