Sounds nice. Where do you get the relay kit? Does Hella sell it also, or does it come with the lights?

i wired-up my own with relays and fuses from radio shack for about $15 (i have wire already) for use with the halogen sealed beams in my car...or you can spend about $100 for a harness already made

I bought mine with my Hella conversion lamps from www.rallylights.com

Here's some info: http://www.rallylights.com/hella/HeadlampWiring.aspx

I got the conversion head light wire harness with relays from Painless. It's all plug and play.

for the guys who have done the conversion, How did you get your power to the relays? I want to maintain as close to factory look as I can. I want to conceal the conversion as much as possible.

the paionless site says to gain power from the battery. How is that done? right from the battery or not?

TIA!

Easy power tap would be the starter relay.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

if ya want it to look stock as possible i would hide the relays under the battery tray and just get main power from the starter relay

I checked out that link. Didn't find any info on light patterns. I'm looking for a brighter, whiter light. And yes i know there different.

Orignal question was who makes a good conversion headlamp.

Hella makes an excellent conversion headlamp. I've used Hella E-code conversion lamps on three of my vehicles which previously used sealed beam halogen bulbs and highly recommend them to everyone.

are these the lights your talking about?

Looks like the same ones I just bought for my car. Did not install them yet.

I just got done with this but wasn't concerned with looking stock. just wanted good quality stuff that I wouldn't have to mess with. I did it in a way where I could uninstall it in about 15 minutes and simply plug my stock stuff back in.

btw, wire size is not an issue with the existing stock setup. 16g feeds the lights. the real issue is all that resistance because the factory didn't use relays and old wiring. look at newer cars...my 99 grand prix uses 16g for the lights.

Starter relay works just fine.

Looks correct for the 7" (2 headlight) Hella E-code version in discussion here.

Keep in mind wire has voltage drop, the higher the current the more voltage drop for a given wire diameter per foot. A four headlamp Hella system with standard sized bulbs(2 55/60 watt H4s and 2 60watt H1s), on high beam will pull about 17amps of total current, considerably less voltage drop on a 12ga wire than on a 16ga.
H4 and H1 bulbs are available in wattages that will simply melt 16 gauge wiring.

Yikes!

What gauge wire would you recommend, or what wattage should we limit ourselves to if keeping the 16 gauge wire? Would keeping the 16 gauge wire defeat the purpose?

IMO, 12ga. minimum on the secondary side of the relays.
Defeat the purpose? Even if you stick with the 16ga wiring the relays are a must for this conversion.

From a previous thread on this subject,
"The sealed beam headlamps used on these cars originally were at best 15-20watts. On a four headlamp car, that is about 3amps for the low beams and roughly 8 amps on all four high beams. All this current passes through the headlight switch, dimmer switch, and the bulkhead connector using 16ga. wiring. Upgrading to a four lamp system with 55/60 watt low beam H4s and 55 watt H1 high beams will bring that current draw to about 8amps on low beam and upwards of 17amps with all four high beams burning. The original 40-yearold switches, wiring and connectors will not last long at that rate. Do yourself a favor and install the relays and run at least 12ga. wires on the secondary side."

I use the 60/55W H4 bulbs and IMHO, they are plenty bright with great visibility. I don't do much driving with my high beams on, so that may be more of a factor for others.

With the painless conversion wireharness you don't use your stock lamp wiring. You plug one of your stock lamp plugs into there harness. It will only act as the trigger for the relay. They supply the wiring for your 4 head lamps. Just unplug your stock harness and let it sit there.

Stupid question. But on a 4 headlight system (71 Cuda')- do you have to have a relay for each light, or can you run 2 off of 1 relay? Thanks

Two relays, one for the low beam circuit and one for the high beams (all four).
