Hi folks, I got a leaking seal where the shifter shaft goes into my A727 trans. Is it as simple as dropping the pan and removing the valve body, then R&R the seal and reassemble? I just don't want to take things appart and then find out I'm over my head.
Thanks

Some folks manage to change the seal without R&Ring the VB but I think it's best to remove it.

Just drive out the old seal and use a stack of washers and a bolt/nut to pull the new seal into position.

I did change the seal in mine without removal, but it's a nightmare to try and line the seal up AND drive it into place on the top of the case, espscially with little to no room in the trans tunnel above to tap a socket. Next time, I'll be pulling the body to change one. Much easier to pull it in as John said.

Thanks guy's! If I do remove the VB, are there any step's of caution or concern? I'm comfortable with external repairs, but even light internal's are not my bag. I'm not seeking a through step by step explanation, but if there is something to watch out for, (flying springs, etc.) any tips would be greatly apperciated. Thanks again & enjoy the weekend!

there is a spring with the accumulator piston that will fall out when you drop the valve body , its over where the 4 bolts in a circle are , piston goes in first , spring against the VB .

also make note , the VB bolts on require 75 INCH POUNDS of torque , they strip real easy .

other than dealing with the park rod its pretty easy .

You might want to back out the neutral safety switch a few turns too to keep it from damaging the contact on the VB.

Also, before you remove the VB, place the shifter in Park and turn the driveshaft until you hear the pawl click into place, then place the shifter in "1"; this makes the park rod easier to remove/install in the tail.

tool
kd tool sells the seal remover and installer.
Only catch was needed a c-clamp to put enough down force to get a bite on the seal. Works pretty well and didn't need to drop the pain again.

Check the shaft also. Mine was so grooved I had to change it also. It is a very high mileage tranny though.
