I have just under 225 miles on the car so far. I didnt build it for fuel economy, but I thought it would be better than what it is. I am getting between 7-8 mpg out of the car so far. How you others doing with yours.

my set up is

426 siamese block
10.25 to 1 j and e piston
manely rods
eagle crank
426-2 indy intake
850 mighty demon
comp cams 508/519 235 at 50 mechanical cam
msd
2 1/8 hooker super comps
3 inch flowmaster exhaust
bowl and pocket work on the mopar aluminum heads
dana 60 with 3.54
4 speed
29.5x15.5x15 rear tire
2850-3000 rpm's at 70 mph
car weighs in at 3640 with a 1/2 tank

What do you think and how are yours doing. This is still a lot better than my max wedge was doing.

I don't think mine's ever done better than that, but in 20 years I've never really checked it; I just make sure there's gas available every 100 miles if it's going that far.
Mine's 438", 2x4 inline original carbs, 10.8:1, 260* @ .050, .565/.547 lift, 4-speed, 4.10, 27.5" tire, 3800 lbs, see Attachment. I generally keep it around 3000-3500 RPM but I have a rule that every time out, it sees full throttle at some point.

If you have to ask then you need to swap it for a leaning tower of power. That sounds like a normal milage figure for that engine.

The best I've ever done with mine is 11.65 mpg cruising at 55-60. It usually gets about 9.6 on the highway. It depends on how many of the carbs I use! It is 10.5:1 has a torqueflite and 4.10 gears.

7 or 8 around town and getting on it once in awhile is about right. With 3.54 or 3.23 gears I generally get 13-14 MPG on the highway with them.

That really isn't as bad considering that I rarely get more than 12 mpg around town in my 4.6 thunderbird.

That's not that bad really. I estimate I only get about 9 or 10mpg with my small block.

You guys will probably call me a liar but years ago when I move back here I drove my Hemi GTX back following my wife. She drove 55 to 60 and I never got out of the back 2 barrels. I got an honest 19mpg. I had a mild hydralic cam in it, quick advance curve in the distributer, 2" headers, 4-spd, 3.54 gears, and LR60-15's. That's the only time I ever drove it that nice, it about killed me. Dave

I get alittle over 10 miles to the gallon
with crossram 770's, 410 gear, 31.5 tires,and
565 cam in a 70 cuda. That would be running 55-60
mph. If I run it hard maybe 5-6 mpg

Haven't got the hemi done yet but the 440 in my 68 RR, auto, 3:91, bored 30 over, mild cam, 9:1 pistons, carter 750 gets about 14 at 70 mph.

I'm expecting 11 out of the hemi on the hiway

I get 16 miles to the gallon in a 69 RR 472 Crate motor with a single 4 barrel and 850 Holley with a Keisler 5 Speed and a 4:10 rear doing 75MPH @2200 RPM.

My totally stock 68 4 sp 3.54 geared RR gets around 11-12...doing typical to and from cruise duty in a suburban area. I drive pretty gently though..at least most of the time.
Incidentally, it gets better mileage than my 4 speed 3.91 geared AAR doing the same thing.

Gas milage ??...gas milage ??...Hahahahahahah.. I supposedly have a big buck , 20 gallon Triangle MFG. tank, which only holds 18 gallon's ( they lied), From my house to Summit is 37 miles, it took alomost all 18 gallon's to get there. Probably had a quart to go.. I don't know..472, 10.5 to 1, 4.10's, 28" tall tire.I like to cruise at 3500 RPM..Single 1050 Dominator, and no, I didn't keep it on the "front" two the whole way there..

My 318 Challenger got about 7 mpg (the carb was junk) before I put the 360 in it. If you ever do get worried about fuel economy, I'll trade you the slant six out of my Valiant for your Hemi. It gets 21 mpg all day long in town.

1968 Charger project. I don't have a fender tag or a buildsheet, so it's getting a 440. Help me decide on a color--most everything looks great! (NOT white. My Challenger is white. Need some variety :D)

Sunroof you sound like me.My 65 with the 440 gets about 3 MPG.That Dominator sure likes to suck gas.My thought is if you can afford a Hemi you can afford the gas.Worst part is with the 12.5 pistons I have to run at least 1/2 110 octane at over 5 bucks a gallon. But I didnt build it to see how much MPG I could get just HP.Rocky

1969 Super Bee 3660 lbs

472 CI, 9.5 CR

Iron heads with bowl work flow 367 @ .700, 330 @ .400

Comp .557/.540 252 @ .050 With stock rockers,intake lift at valve is only .485"

JR 2" headers 3" exhaust with X pipe

MP Dual plane with cleanup and divider milled 5/8"

800 Holley DP with 68 primary jets and enlarged power valve channel restrictions

Ford EDIS distributorless ignition controlled by Megasquirt

Four speed/ Dana 3.54/ 295x50x15 Hoosier QT

On radial rear tires, the car consistently got 12-14 MPG during easy driving and ran mid twelves at 118. The switch to the QTs has dropped it about 1 MPG I've programmed the ignition for 42 degrees advance at light load cruise conditions. I didn't see any gain from the original 35 degrees. In spite of the reduced primary jet size, the O2 sensor shows the engine to still be rich at cruise, with inlet air temps running about 130-140 degrees. Once I've finished the EFI install, I expect to see a well tuned 14-15 MPG.

The Indy intake is probably hurting your mileage. I modeled it for my 472 on Engine Analyzer Pro and it really knocked the bottom out of the torque (and efficiency) in the 2500-2700 RPM cruise range. Still, with tuning, you should be able to increase your mileage significantly. Everyone has their opinion, but a fuel efficient Hemi is nothing to be ashamed of

Roger

426 70 Challenger auto 373's...easy pressure, crusing about 8-11 mpg. With foot in it, 3-4 & you can watch the needle sweep thru 1/8th of tank in one romp.

A fellow I know bought a new 69 RR 3.54 4 speed. Stone stock, never messed with it. He claimed that on a trip to CHicago he pulled down 17 mpg.

I never get that good cuz I have a lead foot. 9 - 10 mpg is about it for me.

About 7 or 8 years ago I went on a 200 mile highway trip with my 69 Hemi GTX. As I was driving it became harder and harder to go up hills without it pinging. I finally made it to my destination and after checking it over, sure enough the timing had advanced to almost 50 degrees total. I got close to 20 MPG on that trip. Huge advance and having to featherfoot it on the hills does have it's advantages.

maybe 1/2 a tank of race fuel per 5 runs...

Lets see track 1/4 mile, 1/2 shut down, run thru pits round up to 1.5 mile...

~7.5 miles per 8 gallons, .9375 gallons per mile or 1.137 miles per gallon.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Well you guys can call me a liar again. Labor day I drove my truck to a car show. Highway/city 13.18mpg, the LM-1 showed 14.2-1 A/F ratio most of the time. I could lean it out more but like to make sure it's safe.
528 Hemi, compression is 10.6-1, Weiand tunnel ram with 2 850+cfm Thermoquads, MP cam 272/274@.050, TA 10" converter, 4.56 gears, 31" tall tires. Timing 30 degrees at idle, 35 degrees@ 2000rpm Cruises at 3400rpm.
It's really hard to stay out of the throttle too. Dave

I took my gtx on a 750mile round trip a few months ago and averaged 10 miles to the gallon driving 65-70mph. Engine is a 528 bored .060 so 542 cubic inches with a hyd cam 242/242@50 with stagev intake with 2 650 carbs and 354 gears. Years ago had a stock 426 in it with factory 1970 hyd cam and took the same trip and averaged 14mpg.

this may not be an apples to apples comparison. i have two cars, b-bodys, both with 440 6-paks, automatics, 3.23 rears. one car is a 69 r/t 272-.455 mopar came, stock exhaust and converter; it'll get around 15mpg on the highway. the other has an engle solid cam (238@.050-.510 lift), street hemi converter, big tti exhaust; it'll do a little over 14mpg. i run vacuum advance distributors and tailor them for driviability. i think the small center carb and vacuum distributors are a big help for mpg and also kept the engine cleaner. big carbs, single plane intakes and full centrifugal distributors wittle away at mpg.

I get 7-8mpg on my 484 Hemi, and I used to get 15mpg with my +0.030" 426 and different cam. It gets a lot worse if you step on it....

All with 4.10's and 31" tall tires and a tight 10" convertor.

I have almost the identical set up. I have 10.7 to 1, stock intake and carbs, stock iron heads, but everything else the same. I get around 16-17MPG at 60-65ish. Around town it gets bad but the front carb seems to want to be open more frequently.

Back in the era when I used to have my '71 Hemi Charger (1980-84), mine would always get around 12 MPG around town, & 16 on the highway. That car ran like a swiss watch!

at full power will empty a tank in approx 3 minutes.

we should be measuring fuel consumption by seconds or minutes not mpg

I have just under 225 miles on the car so far. I didnt build it for fuel economy, but I thought it would be better than what it is. I am getting between 7-8 mpg out of the car so far. How you others doing with yours.

my set up is

426 siamese block
10.25 to 1 j and e piston
manely rods
eagle crank
426-2 indy intake
850 mighty demon
comp cams 508/519 235 at 50 mechanical cam

3 inch flowmaster exhaust

29.5x15.5x15 rear tire
2850-3000 rpm's at 70 mph

What do you think and how are yours doing. This is still a lot better than my max wedge was doing.

Just over 200 miles from a tank. somewhere around 14.6mpg (Imperial gallons=15.75 Imperial gallons to a tank)

Mine gets great gas mileage from me pushing it around on the stand. Dont know how many calories an hour though and I seem to produce less torque than I use to. Of course the engine is a 66 and I am a 60 model

I get 13.9 MPG with my 572 EFI HEMI.
But I had to do some special EFI tuning to do it.

Running very lean at low load conditions.
Lots of spark advance at low loads.
Shut off all the injectors on an decel.
Hold back on the acell fuel (pump shot) unless you mean it.

I run 91 octane, push button 727 trans and 3.70 rear gear.

My old 67 Hemi R/T 4 spd. with alittle head work small hyd.cam, stock comp. would get 14 mpg on highway. That's with stock 14" wheel and tire combo and stock 3:54 gearing at 65 mph.

My 426 isn't anything special. Stock bore and stroke with 11.5-1 compression and stock iron heads with an M1 intake and a 750 CFM Holley along with a .525/292 cam. The car is an automatic with a stock 1800 stall convertor along with 3.31 gears.
From what I have driven the 1970 Challenger my milage is running about 10 MPG with mixed town/highway driving coarse there was a in there.

Oh yeah the best I got was a solid 10MPG 525 cube Stage V heads and intake, 245@ and about 550 lift. 354 Dana in E-body.
Curt

Oh yeah...THAT'S gonna leave a mark!

Same here,....the last few 472's that I fabricated 6 bbl inductions for, running Keisler TKO's .64 OD with 3:54 to 4"10's would avg about 16-18 MPG crusing at approx 80 MPH on cross country events

Dave

I am the current caretaker of Dave's GTX. The Hemi is currently 472 ci with the stock carbs, a very old (1969?) outdated and unefficient Sig Erson cam with lots of duration, and a very heavy foot on my part. I drive this car ALOT. All over New England this summer and down to NC a couple weeks ago. Even with my hard driving, she still manages just shy of 12 MPG. I am amazed! I really think that even with the current set-up, I could get 14 MPG if I would just calm down for a bit. But, that is probably not going to happen.

I just made my first small trip in my 528 hemi about 20 mi each way. It done around 8.5mpg mixed in town and hi way driving with a couple in between. Combo is Barton 528 factory inline intake 2 edelbrocks 10.5 compression 280 660 lift cam 4spd with a 373 gear. It's thirsty but it's fun.

My old '71 Hemi Charger R/T w/3:55 gears used to get around 12 MPG in the city, & about 15 on the highway. Car was all stock except for the heads being redone back in the later 70's - a place in Detroit called "Corky's" did them. I was the second owner of the car & bought it in 1980. Lost it in a fire in Aug, 1984. RIP old friend. And yes, oddly enough I did regularly check the fuel mileage just out of curiosity.

WOW... Just... wow.

There are some staggering figures in here. I'm going to assume that with all the money usually spent on a hemi that these are generally well-tuned engines too, not just off-the-lot factory engines tuned by the local Dodge tech every month.

Why are they so damn thirsty then? I see lots ov single carb (non Dominator) hemis in here too... still thirsty. Is this a sign ov a generally inefficient engine design? I'm sure Hemi's are fun, and its hard to stay off them, but its not like the 440 guys in here are driving like grannies...

In 09 I drove my 69 Sat from Houston to Detroit and back for Woodward. It has a 528 Hemi/TF/3.54 Dana. Then, it had the MP crossram, twin Holley 770's and a 266@50/650 solid cam. Running 65 all the way up and back with the A/C on, it got between 8-11 mpg. With a Dynamic 3600 stall converter, I always wondered how much a tighter converter would have helped.

I consider 8mpg pretty decent. The cam is a solid roller .767/.676, 288/292@.050. Tunnel ram with 2 850 thermoquads, 4.56 gears with 31" tires. I've had a 6000 stall 8" convertor and a 10" 4000 stall in it. The mileage was the same, (I did have to drive it real nice though).Dave

Hemis are actually a very efficient design. They have very large valves 2.25 intake etc. In my case it's 500 plus cubes a pretty large solid cam and a heavy right foot My 87 4x4 250 Power Ram only got 8.5 mpg it was a 360 with a Qjet 4bbl and 4.10 gears.

I drove 114 miles last weekend to a car show. The route was stop and go and about half freeway. My setup is a 540ci HEMI with (2) 750 Hollys on a Stage V intake. The cam is 248/254 @ .050 solid roller. Compression is 10.8. The 727 has a 3500 converter and the Dana has 3.54 gears. The car averaged 10.8 mpg. When I first started driving it the mileage was 7-8 mpg. I tuned the carbs with a vacume gauge and hooded up/tuned the vacume advance in the MP distributor to get the 10.8 mpg. I don't think that is too bad for a 4000lb car and a 540 ci engine spinning 2800-3000 rpm on the freeway.
