I don't think mine's ever done better than that, but in 20 years I've never really checked it; I just make sure there's gas available every 100 miles if it's going that far. Mine's 438", 2x4 inline original carbs, 10.8:1, 260* @ .050, .565/.547 lift, 4-speed, 4.10, 27.5" tire, 3800 lbs, see Attachment. I generally keep it around 3000-3500 RPM but I have a rule that every time out, it sees full throttle at some point.

You guys will probably call me a liar but years ago when I move back here I drove my Hemi GTX back following my wife. She drove 55 to 60 and I never got out of the back 2 barrels. I got an honest 19mpg. I had a mild hydralic cam in it, quick advance curve in the distributer, 2" headers, 4-spd, 3.54 gears, and LR60-15's. That's the only time I ever drove it that nice, it about killed me. Dave

Haven't got the hemi done yet but the 440 in my 68 RR, auto, 3:91, bored 30 over, mild cam, 9:1 pistons, carter 750 gets about 14 at 70 mph.
I'm expecting 11 out of the hemi on the hiway

Gas milage ??...gas milage ??...Hahahahahahah.. I supposedly have a big buck , 20 gallon Triangle MFG. tank, which only holds 18 gallon's ( they lied), From my house to Summit is 37 miles, it took alomost all 18 gallon's to get there. Probably had a quart to go.. I don't know..472, 10.5 to 1, 4.10's, 28" tall tire.I like to cruise at 3500 RPM..Single 1050 Dominator, and no, I didn't keep it on the "front" two the whole way there..

Sunroof you sound like me.My 65 with the 440 gets about 3 MPG.That Dominator sure likes to suck gas.My thought is if you can afford a Hemi you can afford the gas.Worst part is with the 12.5 pistons I have to run at least 1/2 110 octane at over 5 bucks a gallon. But I didnt build it to see how much MPG I could get just HP.Rocky

1969 Super Bee 3660 lbs 472 CI, 9.5 CR Iron heads with bowl work flow 367 @ .700, 330 @ .400 Comp .557/.540 252 @ .050 With stock rockers, intake lift at valve is only .485" JR 2" headers 3" exhaust with X pipe MP Dual plane with cleanup and divider milled 5/8" 800 Holley DP with 68 primary jets and enlarged power valve channel restrictions Ford EDIS distributorless ignition controlled by Megasquirt Four speed/ Dana 3.54/ 295x50x15 Hoosier QT On radial rear tires, the car consistently got 12-14 MPG during easy driving and ran mid twelves at 118. The switch to the QTs has dropped it about 1 MPG I've programmed the ignition for 42 degrees advance at light load cruise conditions. I didn't see any gain from the original 35 degrees. In spite of the reduced primary jet size, the O2 sensor shows the engine to still be rich at cruise, with inlet air temps running about 130-140 degrees. Once I've finished the EFI install, I expect to see a well tuned 14-15 MPG. The Indy intake is probably hurting your mileage. I modeled it for my 472 on Engine Analyzer Pro and it really knocked the bottom out of the torque (and efficiency) in the 2500-2700 RPM cruise range. Still, with tuning, you should be able to increase your mileage significantly. Everyone has their opinion, but a fuel efficient Hemi is nothing to be ashamed of Roger

A fellow I know bought a new 69 RR 3.54 4 speed. Stone stock, never messed with it. He claimed that on a trip to CHicago he pulled down 17 mpg.
I never get that good cuz I have a lead foot. 9 - 10 mpg is about it for me.

About 7 or 8 years ago I went on a 200 mile highway trip with my 69 Hemi GTX. As I was driving it became harder and harder to go up hills without it pinging. I finally made it to my destination and after checking it over, sure enough the timing had advanced to almost 50 degrees total. I got close to 20 MPG on that trip. Huge advance and having to featherfoot it on the hills does have it's advantages.

maybe 1/2 a tank of race fuel per 5 runs... Lets see track 1/4 mile, 1/2 shut down, run thru pits round up to 1.5 mile... ~7.5 miles per 8 gallons, .9375 gallons per mile or 1.137 miles per gallon.

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.
Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Well you guys can call me a liar again. Labor day I drove my truck to a car show. Highway/city 13.18mpg, the LM-1 showed 14.2-1 A/F ratio most of the time. I could lean it out more but like to make sure it's safe. 528 Hemi, compression is 10.6-1, Weiand tunnel ram with 2 850+cfm Thermoquads, MP cam 272/274@.050, TA 10" converter, 4.56 gears, 31" tall tires. Timing 30 degrees at idle, 35 degrees@ 2000rpm Cruises at 3400rpm. It's really hard to stay out of the throttle too. Dave

this may not be an apples to apples comparison. i have two cars, b-bodys, both with 440 6-paks, automatics, 3.23 rears. one car is a 69 r/t 272-.455 mopar came, stock exhaust and converter; it'll get around 15mpg on the highway. the other has an engle solid cam (238@.050-.510 lift), street hemi converter, big tti exhaust; it'll do a little over 14mpg. i run vacuum advance distributors and tailor them for driviability. i think the small center carb and vacuum distributors are a big help for mpg and also kept the engine cleaner. big carbs, single plane intakes and full centrifugal distributors wittle away at mpg.

Back in the era when I used to have my '71 Hemi Charger (1980-84), mine would always get around 12 MPG around town, & 16 on the highway. That car ran like a swiss watch!

I get 13.9 MPG with my 572 EFI HEMI. But I had to do some special EFI tuning to do it. Running very lean at low load conditions. Lots of spark advance at low loads. Shut off all the injectors on an decel. Hold back on the acell fuel (pump shot) unless you mean it. I run 91 octane, push button 727 trans and 3.70 rear gear.

Kinda related...but not really... I drove a 08 duramax diesel w/allison on a 6.7 mile test drive today...trip computer said I used 1.3 gallons...I was in it a little
Oh yeah the best I got was a solid 10MPG 525 cube Stage V heads and intake, 245@ and about 550 lift. 354 Dana in E-body. Curt
Oh yeah...THAT'S gonna leave a mark!

Same here,....the last few 472's that I fabricated 6 bbl inductions for, running Keisler TKO's .64 OD with 3:54 to 4"10's would avg about 16-18 MPG crusing at approx 80 MPH on cross country events

I am the current caretaker of Dave's GTX. The Hemi is currently 472 ci with the stock carbs, a very old (1969?) outdated and unefficient Sig Erson cam with lots of duration, and a very heavy foot on my part. I drive this car ALOT. All over New England this summer and down to NC a couple weeks ago. Even with my hard driving, she still manages just shy of 12 MPG. I am amazed! I really think that even with the current set-up, I could get 14 MPG if I would just calm down for a bit. But, that is probably not going to happen.

My old '71 Hemi Charger R/T w/3:55 gears used to get around 12 MPG in the city, & about 15 on the highway. Car was all stock except for the heads being redone back in the later 70's - a place in Detroit called "Corky's" did them. I was the second owner of the car & bought it in 1980. Lost it in a fire in Aug, 1984. RIP old friend. And yes, oddly enough I did regularly check the fuel mileage just out of curiosity.

In 09 I drove my 69 Sat from Houston to Detroit and back for Woodward. It has a 528 Hemi/TF/3.54 Dana. Then, it had the MP crossram, twin Holley 770's and a 266@50/650 solid cam. Running 65 all the way up and back with the A/C on, it got between 8-11 mpg. With a Dynamic 3600 stall converter, I always wondered how much a tighter converter would have helped.
