My old '71 Hemi Charger R/T w/3:55 gears used to get around 12 MPG in the city, & about 15 on the highway. Car was all stock except for the heads being redone back in the later 70's - a place in Detroit called "Corky's" did them. I was the second owner of the car & bought it in 1980. Lost it in a fire in Aug, 1984. RIP old friend. And yes, oddly enough I did regularly check the fuel mileage just out of curiosity.

WOW... Just... wow.

There are some staggering figures in here. I'm going to assume that with all the money usually spent on a hemi that these are generally well-tuned engines too, not just off-the-lot factory engines tuned by the local Dodge tech every month.

Why are they so damn thirsty then? I see lots ov single carb (non Dominator) hemis in here too... still thirsty. Is this a sign ov a generally inefficient engine design? I'm sure Hemi's are fun, and its hard to stay off them, but its not like the 440 guys in here are driving like grannies...

In 09 I drove my 69 Sat from Houston to Detroit and back for Woodward. It has a 528 Hemi/TF/3.54 Dana. Then, it had the MP crossram, twin Holley 770's and a 266@50/650 solid cam. Running 65 all the way up and back with the A/C on, it got between 8-11 mpg. With a Dynamic 3600 stall converter, I always wondered how much a tighter converter would have helped.

I consider 8mpg pretty decent. The cam is a solid roller .767/.676, 288/292@.050. Tunnel ram with 2 850 thermoquads, 4.56 gears with 31" tires. I've had a 6000 stall 8" convertor and a 10" 4000 stall in it. The mileage was the same, (I did have to drive it real nice though).Dave

Hemis are actually a very efficient design. They have very large valves 2.25 intake etc. In my case it's 500 plus cubes a pretty large solid cam and a heavy right foot My 87 4x4 250 Power Ram only got 8.5 mpg it was a 360 with a Qjet 4bbl and 4.10 gears.

I drove 114 miles last weekend to a car show. The route was stop and go and about half freeway. My setup is a 540ci HEMI with (2) 750 Hollys on a Stage V intake. The cam is 248/254 @ .050 solid roller. Compression is 10.8. The 727 has a 3500 converter and the Dana has 3.54 gears. The car averaged 10.8 mpg. When I first started driving it the mileage was 7-8 mpg. I tuned the carbs with a vacume gauge and hooded up/tuned the vacume advance in the MP distributor to get the 10.8 mpg. I don't think that is too bad for a 4000lb car and a 540 ci engine spinning 2800-3000 rpm on the freeway.
