I am picking up a 440 block that the engine has spun a crank bearing (sellers words, could be a rod but I do not know yet) What type of damage should I expect? The engine is apart so I can inspect it. I am mostly concerned with the block and not the crank. Is it possible the block could be damaged from spinning a bearing? Thanks.

If it's a spun main bearing the block would need to be line honed to correct bearing crush. In doing this you need to remember to order a new -.005
timing set during assembly. If it's a spun rod bearing, regrind crank and resize the rods big
end for correct bearing crush during assembly.

Further to that, check to see if there is discoloration (blueing of the cap, rod, block or crank) as it may have altered the metallurgy of the component in question.

A spun main bearing will often ruin the block.

A spun rod bearing is usually no big deal although I did totally trash an engine on the dyno once by spinning a rod bearing. The rod bearing spun which caused the piston to hit the head and then the cylinder wall split. So that engine was toast from top to bottom.

Also to add more if the rod or main bearing area
of the crank has taken alot of heat it's possible
the crank could be cracked and junk. These are all jugdement calls by all of us because we are
not looking at any parts.
