I know this may sound half a$$ is the hole in the spring perch 1 5/8 if so this is what I did on a 73 New Yorker with iso clamp set up. I took a 1 1/4 craftsman shallow socket 1/2 inch drive and shortened it down so it would fit flush with the spring perches. The 1/2 inch drive in the socket fits the 1/2 spring bolt head perfect and the outside diameter of the socket is 1 5/8 and fits the hole in the perch perfectly. Just trim the socket enough to butt against the axle tube to hold it in place.

eliminating the iso-clamp setup and retaining the stock 7 1/4" axle is a waste of time. if you want to eliminate it, get an 8 3/4 or 8 1/4 out of a '68-70 B body, spring centering bolt and U bolts for the same, and the associated shock plates. it'll pretty much bolt right up.

i planned on doing away with it anyways. for adding the leafs do you guys use one of the stock ones or do you buy an aftermarket kit?

Adding a leaf to the existing spring pack will not raise the rear ride height any, as the rearend sits on top of the leaves. Plus, the lower IC bracket would be too short once you add another leaf.

I see in your other post you've added longer shackles. I hate to say this, but I'm going to-- buy some air shocks and be done with it. They'll give you a bit more clearance, are relatively cheap, and are a bolt-in deal.

or spend the $250 instead of half-a$$ing it and buy new 5 leaf springs from ESPO, or spend $100 getting yours rearched.

No, '71 up rears are 3" wider (64" vs 61") and perches are 3" (47" vs 44") further apart. '68-70 rears are within 1/2" for both measurements as an F/M/J rear (~61" wide, 44.46" perch width).

That's NOT true. The springs will arch more with an extra leaf in it. That will still raise the rear. I had an extra leaf put in the springs on dad's Challenger because the stockers were sagging badly. That did the trick.

Now that the car is being restored however...I will be buying NEW springs. The add-a-leaf trick is just a bandade.

I mean talking about kind of perches without isolation on B bodies. They began on 73

ok, true, I'll give you that, isoclamps didn't start until 73, but a 71-72 rear won't work without using high offset wheels (say, late model mustang), and rewelding the perches.
