What's the difference between the torqeflite used with a 65 318 poly motor and the ones mated with big block motors? I'd like to pick one up for spare parts but don't know how to tell the differences.

Look for the number stamped on the left side by the oil pan.

Thanks that's good reference info to have. I have a line on one already that is claimed to be from a Poly. I'll check it. Besides the numbers, what are the physical differences inside and out? Any?

I don't know why Sheppard doesn't say 1964 - 1992 LA Engine in his book "Small Block "A" Engines (page 377) when he makes this statement.

So, it looks like you can use a smallblock 727 behind your Poly 318.

thanks for the reply. What I'm actually tring to do is find spare parts for my big block trans. I read in the "Chrysler Performance Upgrades" book by Frank Adkins, that "..from 62 to 64 there were two versions of the trans. The Torqueflite 6 and the Torqueflite 8, which became the A-904 and A-727 respectivly." He does not delineate any difference between the Poly, A, LA, B/RB V8s. Hence my confusion.

If the trans is for a big-block, the top 2 bolt holes where it bolts to the engine will be 6.5" apart, and if its for a poly or a small block, the top 2 bolt holes will be farther apart, but I don't remember what the measurement is right off the top of my head.

FYI, SB top bolts are 7-3/4" C-to-C.

Thanks. Do any or all of the internals interchange? How about the shift and speedo cables? Are they the same?

I still think the easiest way to tell a BB 727 from a SB 727 is to look at the 4 threaded holes at the bottom of the bellhousing; the BB will have 4 small holes and the SB will have 2 small near the center and 2 larger holes further out.

The internals of the /6, SB and BB 727 are all the same, and interchange without any problems. Tailshafts are also the same, just difference in long and short ones.(and truck tails). Bellhousing is different..
