From a guy who used a 5hp 3phz 2 stage Quincy pump with 2 80 gallon tanks for years ... ANY decent oil used on a limited basis can be used.

Straight 30 or 40(depending on temp) is bester. And a detergent oil will not hurt the pump.

I've used Mobile One in my compressor for years. No problems. Don't remember the weight. Just whatever I had lying around.

Napa sells non-detergent oil. Its not that the detergent itself is 'bad', it just serves no purpose in this application, and detergent is not a lubricant.

The way it was explained to me is detergent can cause foaming in an air compressor... In the end any lube has to be better than no lube...

Never heard of that but maybe... Trying to figure why it might foam in a compressor but not in an ICE?????

And additives that are not lubricants do, in effect, dilute the lubricity of oils. Viscosity improvers are a major one--thats why straight weight oils are such good lubricants if the application doesn't benifit from a multi.
