What's the safest way to remove paint from chrome trim?

Try lacquer thinner on a cloth. Test it first to be sure its real chrome but it should take the paint right off without damaging the chrome plating.

I use 000 steel wool and a chrome polish after CAREFULLY scraping off the thick stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. It is the cosmetic chrome piece that screws to the top of my instrument panel on my 66 D100.

Just last night I used fine steel wool and scrubbed pretty heavy to get some paint off of stainless trim. It turned urned out looking great.
