Finally traced my mysterious squeak. I jacked the car up, put in gear and had my wife sit in the car with her foot on the brake. As soon as you put the car in a forward gear a rather large squeak comes from the torque converter. Doesnt do it in N and doesnt seem as loud in R.

Any ideas?

Gonna pull it in and pull the tranny back.

We had a converter go bad a long time ago in a 340 Roadrunner, it sounded like the car had a loud gear drive in it.

yes a bad converter can sound a lot like that when in gear.

Pulled it all apart and everything checks out OK. Checked crank end play and it is OK also.

Anyway to determine it might be the converter without sending it off?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

All you can do is stick your finger in the converter and see if everything turns free'ly and look for broken pieces or metal shavings. Best bet is to send it out while it's out of the car and it's early in the season.

I had one that started making a squeek or chirp when I put it in gear . It was definately the converter. The 60' were a 1/2 second off. The car would just fall on its face out of the hole.

better hope it's not a bearing in the motor. I have seen that a few times.

I had a whine... sounded something like a supercharger as I recall. THe bearing in the convertor had come apart. Only way to tell (fluid was clean, no metal or damage visible) was the noise, and the brake stall was not consistent. Bottom line, it if's noisey, and it wasn't, and evrything else is fine, then it's the convertor.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Found the problem or lack thereof after 8 hours of wrenching. Turns out it was the slip tube on my passenger header vibrating....

Positive. The rocker arm is a new problem since I pulled the whole shaft and rockers off on Thurs and they were fine then.
