I'm planning on using either the 509 cam or something very similar. Is MP the way to go, or should i be looking at other vendors?

what are you going to do with the car?? if it's a driver you'll be un happy with the 509. i had it in my R/R with a4 sp and 391 didnt come alive till 1800- 2000. idle was huh ruff. my fiend runs the 484 and everyone i talked to drop down to the 484 and was happier. or go to a comp or a reed cam

I had a 509 in my 70 Cuda with a 440. It must not of had enough compression. It was a real dog. I put a Comp Cam XE274H and it was like night and day. Very happy. It pulls hard from the bottom rpms to top.

If you want a good street/strip cam and have around 10:1 compression I would definitely with either the Comp XE275HL or the Lunati Voodoo 60303 which is a few degrees milder than the aforementioned comp grind.

The 509 has for a long time been the mainstay of the MoPar big block performance machine. That being said its outdated, I'd run something from Hughes or Engle.

It will realy depend on what you want in the car. Will it be a street/strip car or street only ?? The MP .509 will make great power for what it is in the right combo. But it has a nice lopey idle that is great if you like that and can live with it. And you need to run a good bit of gear and converter with the .509 along with at least 10.0 comp imo. In the right combo the .509 will scream but if your car is street only and you dont set the combo right to get low end with the .509 you wont like it. Street only as a driver and a nice idle then I would go with as stated the Comp ' Lunati , Hughes , Engle or Crane. Call the cam company and tell them the combo you are building so they can help you or get in touch with Dwayne Porter as he is very good with cams. Good luck , Ron

Call one of the Mopar engine shops, they will help you out.

We really do have some great Mopar shops around the country so it is hard to point you to just one.

The Lunati Voodoo cams sure make good street cams.
The Voodoo's are a step up from the BR. II's.

The Mopar 484 and 509 cams were designed for bracket racing. Their good points are that they are cheap, relatively easy on valve springs, and make good mid/upper RPM power. The cons are they have a rough idle and weak low end power.

There are better cams avaliable that can make better power through a wider RPM range. They are a bit more expensive, and usually require using valve springs matched to the cam being used.

The Hughes cams are some of the most agressive profile flat tappet cams avaliable off the shelf.
The Comp HE2??HL cams are good too.
I think the Voodo cams are simular, but I have not used them.

ive run the .484, .509 and the .528. if your useing a solid settup i would go with the .528 unit little less duration and still not to hard on things.

509 is a good cam for a 10:1+ motor, good heads, intake, headers and 3.91's or better. If you want to keep the 3.23's you'd probably be better off w/ a different cam. Something a little more low-ended.

what is the engine combination?
Are you just going to install the cam in the stock engine or are you rebuilding the motor?
Is that a 383 or 440? What pistons/compression ratio, heads and/or headwork? what intake and exhaust are you using?

Definetly do not want to use the .509 cam in that combo. The MP stock bigblock cam would work nice in that. It has about .455 lift and .258 advertised I believe. Or just call Comp or Crane or whatever cam you decide on and let them help you. Ron

It's a 440 30 over w/ Arias piatond (about 9.5), but that could change if the heads are planed. I want to maintain pump gas, it has a Holley 750 dp, and an Edelbrock chp4(?). Hooker super comps 1 78/" and a 2.5 exhaust, which will be upgraded to 3" in the future. I'd like to keep the 3.23 gears as I like to drive distances. The motor is being rebuilt.
I'm looking for the best cam for this set-up including the stealth heads.

With a manual trans street driven its loads of fun to have lots of torque on tap from 2000 to 5000 RPM. The 509 won't give you that - it has too much duration plus you can't run a loose convertor to compensate. A faster rate cam as posted above with enough lift to take advantage of your heads would work much better.

With the stealth heads, if you can get your piston to zero deck so the "quench" equals the .040 (approximate) thickness of the head gasket you can run more compression than 9.5. 10.25 would still be conservative and give more torque and power. If your piston is "down in the hole" then 9.5 or a little more is probably about right.

mopar 484? that will be a dog w/ 3.23's it's not much different than the 509. It pulls terrible vacuum and has poor street manners. The old grind anyway.

the 484 is gonna want gear. It is a racing cam.

not as bad as the 509. Which is a serious cam that is every bit as good as the cams today. Most modern cams are small base circle. If a thumping shaft is getting shoved in a mill hole, It better be thick and bumpy.
