The bulletin reads in part:
"A new piston will be incorporated into production on the 440 C.I.D. standard engine late in 1971 production. This piston is lighter than the early piston so requires a new crankshaft.
Severe engine vibration will result if the early crankshaft or piston is used in these engines. The engines will be identified with the letter "C" on the identification pad on the top, adjacent to the left block and tappet rail as follows:"
....shows engine serial pad with stampings and goes on to list pn's for pistons and crank.

My buddy is doing a semi restoration on a '70 Charger R/T SE. The motor was a warranty piece that's never been out of the car, obvious by the fact the block is bare metal whereas the heads, intake, oilpan, bellhousing are orange.

Strangest thing is there were 7 six pack rods and one standard.

It says Std. 440, so it is about the non-HP versions.

Best way is to look at vin tag on dash, crawl under car with a good flashfight, might need a rag with laquer thinner. If stamping on motor looks good and matches last part of vin, crawl out from under car and yell out "yippee I just found a 440 6 pack block".

Rick.

very INTERESTING , for years the mASSES have been drinking Galen's koolaide and saying that the C denoted special crankshaft for 440-6 engines ... NOT

Does the stamped date on the engine ID pad by the distributor on a 440 refer to the build of the short block or the long block? At what point did Chrysler stamp the spec. info on that pad?

I guess it depends on the particular build , if it was a complete engine then it would be of the long block , if it was a partial enngine then it was of the short block ...
