My fan is probably 1/2" from core!

I would be concerned but I used a steel mount. Is this normal? All fittings/petcock will need to be pulled to install the rad... Just seems too close..Thoughts? Thanks

Dude be careful. I bought one for that 67 and it fit...barely. When I hit the brakes hard you could hear it go into the rad. you need a different clutch shaft.

Most instruction sets I have ever seen call for 1" clearance.

Normal with a 4 core radiator.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Sometimes you need it to miss by more than 1 inch, one of them time's is when you break 1 motor mount. And have the other mount so loose you don't need a wrench to take it off.For got to take a picture of the radiator, but can tell you it was not a pretty site. But really 1 inch is about perfect.

Mine is close enough I have to take the fan off to change the belts. I would say within 1/4 of an inch.

That’s what all the marks on the radiator are from...

I eventually removed the fan to install the belts. This is after I broke the fan shroud

if its running a shroud the fan blade should be sticking 3/4 of the blade in the shroud and 1/4 of the blade out of the shroud for best flow

the rad should be seal to the top of the core support to stop the air flow over the top of the rad to more direct it through the rad

I dont think it does it any good close to the rad as it can get like that,IMO

got the hood, rad, belts, upper rad hose, and not to mention the fan

side steped the clutch at 4800rpms and broke a mount.... then went and changed pants then came back and

I like a direct drive fan too, they have a few sizes for spacers and they are easy to get it in the spot you want

if you used a 1/2 spacer and bolted a direct drive fan blade close to the pully with just enuff room for belts and pully you would gain more room at the rad

and may even be able to fine tune it in a NEW shroud

I used a 7 blade soild fan from a 68 /6 Dart for yrs and worked fine...just dont drop stuff in it

unless ya goota have a clutch fan

Mine is 1" away using the stock 2863216 440 18" fan blade with a 3462179 clutch (which is supposed to be from a 400 Max cool application)
This is with a 3 core "055" radiator

When I was running the MP Viscous package the clearance was about 1/2 - 3/4"

I have heard some use a clutch made for a Jaguar which is shorter...

Check out my post from a few months back. My fan was scraping my radiator. As recommended in the post, I switched to the Imperial fan clutch for a 80 something jaguar and the problem was solved. Here is a link to my original post. The link includes the part number to the clutch that I purchased. https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post4907297

Mine is from 1/2 to 3/4 inch away from the radiator core. Been like that for a few years. I drive like I stole it. No problems.

Check out EBay and the swap meets look for a fan clutch #FC28. Direct Mopar replacement made by TRW it is about 2 3/4" in total height.
We checked out the mentioned universal Jag one but to use this one has to drill out the water pump shaft hole in the OE pulley. Also the slotted mounting holes don't snug done as nicely as the closed OE Mopar mounting..

Just my $0.02...

I got the Jag clutch today....Do you guys use a bushing as the hub is larger on the clutch than the Mopar water pump? C

Those fan clutches come with a pilot shaft bushing. If it's missing, take it back and get one with the bushing.
