I've purchased a few gas caps for my 71 Bee and no matter if they are NOS or Stant replacements they never sit with the handle horizontal after installing. What gives here???
Car is a B04 build and I even changed the filler tube to a nicer one but same deal. Saw this on another guy's Charger also so it has to be the way the caps are being made.
I've tried two of this P/N even though they were both a little different than each other: NOS MoPar 1970-72 Plymouth Dodge GAS CAP 3466825
And a Stant P/N G47/G806

Thanks Ron

I don't believe the cap on my original unrestored 71 runner sits level either, but I'd have to check to be sure.

Mine was a August of 70 build date and that’s the way it is.

Hera are a couple pictures of my 71 R/T. I have no idea if it's an original cap but clocks the same as yours. It a September 70 SPD

Why do you find it strange on something you never see with the license plate down

?

Don't know about '71 B-body gas caps but the '68 '69 caps has a bridge over the center rivet and the location is dictated by the rivet. I would guess the fixture by the OEM supplier was set up to have that in a horizontal position??? Should the '71 gas cap look like this with the bridged cross "handle"???

And I totally agree. I would think for the most accuracy it would be the correct style cap then maybe the position. If it's the closed cap handle position then maybe heating the rivet enough to "maybe" release some of the rivet tension and off the car on an old stand alone filler neck you could reposition and get that well needed sleep grin wink

No pictures, but my LA built (Aug 70) runner clocks the same as Steve70s photo. On my survivor St Louis built (Dec 70) runner the handles are vertical.

Because I like things a certain way, any car I've owned since 1977 when the cap was tight the handle would be straight across. Very simple. I am joking when I say I'm losing sleep. Would you be OK if your door lock was twisted in the door or trunk??? I know I wouldn't but that is usually what separates my cars from others.
I wouldn't think the desire for correct isn't a bad thing with a classic car.
