I just got home. We had our challenges. My 2 1/8" tube headers hit the dyno frame so I had to use a set of 2" fender wells I took along so the exhaust ports measure 2.150 across on a 2" tube. That couldn't be helping things. To top it off my pro systems 1050 was giving us a fit and when I went to the truck the box I grabbed out of the garage didn't have the SV1. yup! 1 1/2 south in Baltimore... Ugg anyways after bolting on the dyno tuners 1150 dominator she made 865hp @ 7200 and 760 lbs tq @ 5800. I will post the dyno sheet with all the pulls once I get it. It's being emailed and I haven't got it yet. The motor is making really good power from basically 5200 - 7400. It was above 700 lbs torque @ 4800 and climbed from there. I'm thinking my good headers a carb that works and a vacuum pump and I'll be at 900. Anyways... I'll post the sheet once I get it. Thanks for all the interest.

Yep, sounds like a typical dyno day! I've fought thru a lot of those over years where stuff doesn't fit or the customer forgets something. Over time we stopped used customer supplied parts since they usually didn't fit or work. So now we use our own headers, carb, distributor, etc. to fire the engine.

Sounds like she'll make plenty of power for you once you get it in the car with your parts.

That’s really good power with using 2” fenderwell headers.

I’m sure it would have been real close to 900 with the bigger tubes.

On a pretty mild 542 with ez heads, going from 1-7/8” fenderwells to my dyno headers was a 40hp difference.

Yep that fender well header is a killer. Usually the tubes are long enough to plumb a corn field.

That hurt you more than the tube diameter. That and most FW headers have notoriously short collectors.

Just because you think it won't make it true. Horsepower is KING. To dispute this is stupid. C. Alston

The telling tale will be ET, mph once it's in the car. It didn't break. Recorded a fair number with room for easy improvements. What's the car weigh? Trans and gear?

This is basically how I feel. Lots of easy potential, it survived 9 hard hits and made promising numbers. I need to figure out how much fuel I need also.

The car is a '68 cuda, 727, stall I'm thinking is gonna fall around 6000, dana 4.88 w/ 33" slicks

I have had 5700, 5900, 6100 flash. The 5900 has been the best, 6100 was almost as good. Tried 4.10 and 4.30 with 10.5W x 31. Both about the same.

4.88 gear seems like a lot with that engine. What is your trap speed going to be with that much power? 145 or 150 mph? Those gears will have you spinning 7500+ rpm. What did the torque curve look like on the dyno? I'm guessing peak torque was in the 5500 to 6000 rpm range? HP peak was probably less than 7000 rpm wasn't it? You might need to drop the gear ratio down to 4.56 or even 4.30 to avoid spinning it too hard in the lights.

I agree. Plus hitting a 4.88 gear with that much torque will be hard to control to say the least. Good job on the motor though. That is pretty typical of that engine variety at least the ones I have done.

I would guess with the 33" tall tire a 4.56 would be about the right gear given the combo - that is assuming 1/4 mile racing if it's running 1/8 mile only - I would go with the 4.88 and let it eat

My combo; 4.56 gear, 33x15x15 goodyear 2078 (105 roll Out) 150 mph logged 7450 trap rpm, 9.5 lennys, stall 6,000 rpm to 6200. I would put a 4.30 in it, no more. If you want to run a 14x32, then 4.10.
With a 2.45 low and a 4.56 gear, the SLR is 11.17, which is awfully high for a 572. Take crank torque at 6,000 x 2 (converter) x11.17= about 17,000 at the hit to the axles on launch. Digest that for an instant. Plan on a transbrake?

That's the same thing the dyno owner and engine builder said. My plan is to more then likely take some gear out of it.

Andy, your pretty close peak torque was 5800 and peak hp 7200.

7200 rpm for a power peak is pretty impressive given the fact that you had fenderwell headers and a borrowed carb. I'm assuming the intake is "out of the box"? With a ported intake, a big carb and the correct headers you'll pick up at least 50 if not 75 hp.

Good luck with the car, it should fly. Even if you have too much gear in the car you can just run it at 3/4 throttle until you get comfortable with the extra power and then back off the gear when you're ready to go full throttle.

One thing to watch out for is converter slip as you reduce gear ratio. A low 9 second car that runs at the local track has been fighting that. He dropped from 4.88 gears to 4.30 gears and the trap RPM barely budged since he had more slip. So you have more than one variable in the equation.

Thanks Andy

The intake it matched to the heads already. I have mazzaloni 2 1/8" step headers and figuring out the carb now. I had the same thoughts about feeling it out. Definitely not a bring it out on the brake and let it fly combo...

I'll be asking lots of converter questions soon enough.

Hopefully I'll have the dyno sheets soon to post. I haven't received them in my email yet.

Wrong headers on the dyno or not, that engine makes enough steam to snap my junk in two. eek
