I’m building a Street strip 71 Duster and will be putting a fuel cell and the battery in the trunk. The car will still have a full interior in it ( rear seat, package tray, etc). My question is does NHRA require a rear firewall when the car is equipped this way? The rule book regarding this topic is vague but I believe from the wording that it does. This is the first car I’ve built with a fuel cell and I don’t want to show up at the track and be told I can’t run it without a firewall.

Yes. "All fuel tanks (and batteries) must be isolated from the drivers compartment by a firewall, completely sealed to prevent any fuel from entering the drivers compartment" Fuel, fumes, fire is what we're concerned with. Minimum .024 steel or .032 aluminum. It is supposed to be fitted and made to isolate the trunk from the cab, not just be some half a$$ piece of metal stuck in there for looks. You can still put the factory seats in there, but from a safety standpoint, a factory seat back will not do the job.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I took a piece of .030 steel I had and riveted it to the package tray front edge / lip , and through the floor on the bottom.
I cut out around where the seat mounts would stick through and used seam sealer at the edges of these and on the sides.
The seat back pops in like normal and you can't tell.
You have to cover the speaker and vent holes on the package tray as well , and I did.....but how close it gets scrutinized depends on who is working in tech when you go through.
Since you can't hear the radio when it is running anyway , it wasn't a big deal to close them off for me.

Ok thanks for the replies guys, I figured I needed to put some metal in to close it off but couldn’t find it explicitly spelled out in the rule book.

General Regulations - 1:5 Fuel Systems - Tanks. And 8:1 Batteries.

Ahh that’s why. I was looking at the firewall section. Thanks!
