Question for the guru's regarding 68 vin numbers and rear trunk lip numbers. I'm building a 68 Coronet for my kid and was curious how anyone can tell from the VIN weather how body ID number matches the rear trunk lip, I know 69 n up the vin matches that numbers but 68 and back doesn't?

You would need original paperwork like a broadcast sheet, factory to dealership invoice or Mulroney label as a few examples to tie the two numbers together.

If you can tell the fender tag has never been off then that is all you need. Paperwork always helps... work

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

The '68 fender tags have the SO number & it would match the body numbers, not the dash VIN.

Thus, original paperwork would still be needed to tie the VIN & body numbers together.

Vin tag, fender tag and body numbers ties the car together, Certicard would also help. I believe 68 and older cars, the fender tag is more important than the vin tag but of coarse you need the vin tag.

Build sheet!!!

I don't have the fender tag or build sheet🙄. It's just a 318 auto car but was curious on the 68 and back cars why the body numbers weren even close to the VIN.
Thanks for the help, if the fender tag surfaces I'll chime back in.

The numbers stamped into on the bodies of pre 1969 cars were the vehicle order and line number, not the VIN sequence numbers.

Your body is stamped

E - Los Angeles
8 - 1968
W - Coronet
094485 - Order Number

The order number is on the fender tag, build sheet and Window Sticker also.

The build sheet and Window Sticker are the only thing that ties to the two numbers together.
