Thinking of having some tail light lenses fab’d. Going to call the Plastic Depot in Burbank California. Reading an article in Hemings Musclecar where Steve Strope had a set made for his F85 Olds. Anybody here use them?

Never had that done, so I can't comment on that. But why not just buy a pair of repop lenses? Or are these not for your Dart.

do you have originals to copy?
I worked with a guy a long time ago that send out my originals to someplace to have molds made and repoped a set for my coronet, before they were easy to get.
I might still have contact info somehwhere if you want it.

Didn't Layson used to make tail light lenses. Are they still around?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I work at plastic Depot. We are located in Burbank, California. Me and my boss (Kyle) are both big Gearheads. Due to the fact that we are located in Southern California and are big in the car show scene, we meet a lot of people in the industry. Steve Strope heard about us and hit us up about making custom tail lights for his 64 Cutlass. Kyle ended up on Steves new show making the tail lights. They came out awesome. We make the molds and pour the resin and produce some of the best tail lights you will ever see. If you have any questions, hit us up.

Yeah, Isaw the episode where Steve had his lenses made. Contacted Kyle last week. Got the quote yesterday. $2200.00 to do the lenses and you guys keep the mold. That didn’t include the cost of shooting the lenses with clear coat. Not trying to flame your business and I’m sure you guys do outstanding work. Don’t think I”ll go that route

Most original lenses were injection molded from Acrylic resin which has a high tolerance to heat (hot bulbs, Arizona parking lots, etc.).

Cast lenses are typically made of various two-part resins, primarily Urethanes, which do not have nearly the same tolerance to heat as Acrylics. Yes, some new materials are more heat resistant than others but there's still a LARGE gap between the best of them and Acrylics.

The casting process typically requires a good original which is used as a pattern to make a soft silicone mold in which the two-part resin is poured into. These silicone molds reproduce very minute details and the parts can look extremely accurate, however, you need to be wary of the heat-resistant properties they may (or may not) have. They also shrink a bit so may not fit as well as the originals, a long part like a 300 lens would likely shrink a pretty fair amount lengthwise.
