I am trying to find one that will fit my needs.......-10 return , - 10 supply with sump , vent ( most I have seen are -8 and that is fine ) and 15 to 22 gallon capacity , since it is a thirsty street car most of the time.
Poly or aluminum , and preferably foam filled.
0-90 ohm sending unit.
These are what the perfect fuel cell will have , and I am warming up to the idea that I won't be able to get what I want without dropping more $$$ that I'd like to.
Have any of you added returns to your cells ?
I wouldn't be afraid to modify one if I had to and it wasn't a McGuyver kind of deal.
Thanks in advance.

Do you want a TRUE fuel cell or just a simple fuel tank with foam inside ?

I guess tank would be correct.........I don't need a bladder , but I wouldn't say no to one either , as long as it doesn't push the cost into aerospace territory.
Also modifying a cell with a bladder would probably be out of the question.

I would guess you dont weld.. a fuel tank is
pretty easy to build and you can make it fit
your needs.. this is one I built for my
Rampage.. its 18 gal with a sump.. I use a
external pump since I changed over to EFI
after I built the tank.. it has a sending
unit and a few lines on it

I've always switched to a -12 outlet fitting, and then used the old one, and installed it to the top of the cell for a return.

I don't weld aluminum , and have the pics to prove it.
Did you bother with foam in that one , Mike ?
I like the changing fittings approach , and will definitely keep that in mind.
That is the most likely way this is going to play out.

I have a stock tank with the C/E sump welded on it and a return fitting plumbed into the rt. front corner , but with the Ford rear and the brace , it is going to be too tight in the stock location.
I figured to upgrade to a " cell " style tank , move the weight back some and sacrifice a little trunk floor.

There are people who build custom tanks. A simple rectangular tank with the fittings, cap, mounts, etc., should not be too bad. But it will likely be more money than a mass produced piece.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I could probably get some aluminum cut up and have it welded.....baffles would be good and I could put the fittings where I want them.
I'll price materials and a sending unit.
How thick would you recommend ?
.090 or so should be O.K. I think.
Did you set yours in the diamond plate box , or is it made of .125 diamond ?

I disagree, especially for a street car, unless its maybe 6061, you can stick a screwdriver thru it, and you are not using a bladder, right? 15-22 gals exits a tear/puncture pretty quick, by the time the driver smells it, best if you are wearing a 3.5 fire suit. The weight difference is minimal going to .125" in the big picture, and your welder will be happier. twocents

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

15-22 gal. is a lot of weight. Not your typical race car tank. I would be afraid of .062. Stainless might be a better option. I've gotten decent quotes from Boyds in Florida. Maybe see what they have to say.

If your scared of .062 put a skid plate under
it with a gap... I had 30+ years of building
tanks.. 6061 is hard to bend with out a nice
radius.. stainless.. is pricey
