Picked up some new used unmodified pressure plates to put this all back together but can only get the rear smooth alto reds to put in the front drum.

Anyone see a problem with this?

They really should be grooved. The oil has to escape from between the frictions and steels to get them applied.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I expect you'll want grooved front altos to purge the oil like CMcAllister said . Look at CRT's kit: http://coperacingtranscom.ipage.com/?product=904-rebuild-kit-race-72-up

The rears appear they can be either, but he only lists grooved for the front. I'd give John Cope a call - he's very knowledgeable. He spent a lot of time answering my dumb questions when I built mine.

I have another supplier to try locally and if they don't have a grooved alto its going to be either Borg Warner High energy 4 @ .088 with 2 thick steels to get the right clearance or Raybestos blue thins @ 0.063 again these are for the rear clutch but they should be grooved and work in the front?

Is all this trouble really worth it for an extra clutch in the front drum?

I run the smooth thin Altos in my 727. 350 passes, still looked new at last inspection. 9.0@3345lbs

In the front drum Doug?

Spoke to the other supplier about alto thin smooths in the front clutch and his response was it made for a soft/mushy 2-3 change.

I believe I said they were interchangeable when the OP was questioning if they would fit size wise, tooth pattern, etc. The OE stuff years ago was specific material, groove pattern and thicknesses for the front and rear clutches. Now the aftermarket supplies a variety of performance materials, grooves and thicknesses. Blue Plates and performance frictions from Raybestos, Altos, Borg Warner, smooth, grooves, waffle, etc. I'm sure everyone has their own preferences and favorites.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Yes in the front drum. I actually run the stock ones in the rear drum. No issue with the shifts.

Couldn't get the grooved altos so i went with 4 Borg Warner clutches in the front drum and smooth altos in the rear drum. Spoke to a local builder/supplier who told me at my power level they should be fine.

Now to move onto the front pump.
