What seam sealer is available that is close to what Chrysler used at the factory? I redoing the seam sealer and also the brushing marks that are seen on the sealer. Thanks.

I used Wurth Brushable and was able to put it on thick and sloppy like it was originally. I think it is a pretty good match.

Don't forget there are two types used - the tar type and the white type.

I know the interior was black. What was the color of the rear in the trunk area? I heard or read somewhere that some Exec's wife got her dress or clothing marred up from the black color and they changed it to a lighter color sealer in the trunk area.

My 70 was white in trunk.

All of it is white except the tar type that is at the seam between the trunk floor and rear floor board. Behind the shock mount area.

Here's an original Hamtramck built 70 Challenger. It looks like some sealer was applied before paint (floor and firewall) but the heavy dark sealer looks like it was applied after

I believe the black sealer was softer and the paint sprayed over it was absorbed into the sealer. There was paint on some parts of the black on cars I had in the 70's. Maybe where it was sprayed heavier.

It's applied before paint also it's just that paint does not stick to it too well. If you peel it off you will see primer, not paint, underneath.

You are correct, you can see the primer under the sealer in this picture. It looks like they used 2 different types of sealer, maybe one by hand and the other by gun as it's much thicker and darker on the floors verses the sides.

I believe the car had sub assemblies and when these larger sections were assembled to each other a different sealant was used.

Black, tar based sealant was applied forward of the rear wheel tubs. This sealer was applied after dipping the body shell in the primer vat and before painting. The paint did not adhere to the tar, but if you look very closely, you can see faint signs of paint color.

At the tops of the wheel tubs and at the middle of the rear axle hump, the sealant changed from black, tar based, non-drying in front to white sealant in the trunk that dried and hardened. This sealant was also applied before painting.

Both the black and white sealants were applied to the body shell as one assembly just before painting.

Sealants in the engine bay are different from the black and white sealants mentioned above. A non-tar based sealant oozed out of the cowl pinch weld. Another non-tar based sealant was used on the cowl, and balls of sealant were used at the corners of the engine bay. A white sealant similar to what was used in the trunk was used on the fenders near the adjustable hood bumper and also on the undersides of the trunk and hood edge seams.
