Looking at buying a 2500 Dodge Ram. I’m going to be using it for plowing and hauling my landscape trailer, sleds, and my cars. I’ve heard good things about the 6.4 but have also heard there really hard on gas.

Gas is MUCH better for plowing, plus it will kill the resale value especially in a diesel! I tow with a 2015 2500 4x4 with the 5.7 Hemi and didn't want the 6.4 due to the MDS. I average around 14 mpg town and highway driving and expected that. I would have loved to get a diesel but couldn't justify the $10K cost over the 5.7 Hemi. twocents

As a dealer tech I’m seeing more and more people go the 6.4 direction, matter of fact now that we’re entering snowbird season I’ve seen some pulling some rather large rv’s. Look up the job ratings of the 6.4 and even I was surprised at the towing rating. Of course the downside is mpg towing...

I wouldn't thank you for any diesel built after Oct 03.

Unless you put over 50k a year on it you won't live long enough for the fuel savings, if there are any, to pay for the diesel upcharge in the price of the truck never mind the thousands all the emissions after treatment crap is going to cost just to keep it running after the warranty runs out.

If you just have to have a diesel, find a nice low mileage 24 valve pre common rail unit and be prepared to pay the ransom. Nice ones are pricey.

As high as the price will be for a 20ish year old truck, it won't be close to 2018 Diesel Dodge money.

Cummins is superior for pulling and I understand the new ones are pretty trouble free again. Gas is better for plowing. I think I would buy the Cummins when they have a free diesel deal at the dealers like they seem to do once a year.

I am still hauling everything around in my 1996 2500 Ram V10 so gas mileage is never a big thing for me as I don't drive far for daily use. Mainly, just use for towing/hauling. My truck is now 23 years old & still only has 168,000 on it so as much as I would like a diesel the maintenance costs vs fuel mileage doesn't make sense so I have been leaning towards a newer 6.4L 2500/3500 Ram myself someday soon to retire my 96.

Do the diesels still take forever to give you heat in the winter? Thats why I got rid of mine, got tired of not being able to clean the windows of ice and snow until the truck warmed up.

I love Cummins, I have a 95 and an 06. I picked up an 18 Power Wagon. They have the 6.4 in them. I couldn't justify buying a new Cummins with all he new emissions garbage on them. Now if I was pulling heavy every day that would be an easy choice. Everything on a diesel is very costly to fix and I a keep all my vehicles forever.

I have 3k on the Power Wagon and a third of that has been pulling campers and car trailers. 12mpg average and a lot of that has been up in the mountains. Something I don't miss about pulling at 7k feet is my turbo taking forever to light.

A fellow racer /multple time track champ/ diehard Chevy racer just sent me a picture of the 16 2500 6.4 he just bought saying he went to the dark side.He always had old Chevy duallies at the Bracket Finals this year his old dually developed a knocking sound in the engine, he had to borrow a truck to tow home. i hope he likes it … i will never hear the end of it if he doesn't.

We run a small fleet of 6.7's in 4500 trucks (2008-2016). Like them for performance and really glad they have a 100k emissions warranty. The traps, catalysts ect. are very costly when they fail. We have several over 100k and hope all the problem parts are fixed now. So far so good.

The 6.4 closes the gap for torque and performance. Plus diesel is usually more costly per gallon.

In your application I would choose the gas engine personally.
