Over the winter, I'm planning on rebuilding the heater box in my 69 roadrunner as there is something rattling around inside it when I'm driving the car. Mostly happens when the one vent cable is opened slightly so I'm guessing its a gasket or seal that is fallen off or disintegrated. Even though its not leaking, I'm strongly considering replacing the heater core as I know it will probably start leaking next year as the thing is most likely the original one and since I have it apart, I might as well do it now. Who makes the best and most durable heater cores on the market now? Or are all of them basically the same? I was thinking about checking on Rock Auto or should I avoid that? For what it is worth, the car is a non-air cond. car.

Place to send your original to if you don't want to buy a new one.

http://www.restorationradiators.com/

Detroit Muscle Technologies (Member 71TA on here) sells heater box rebuild kits.

One mine the white rope caulk in the rebuild kit was too thick to fit into the channels between the two halves so I rolled it down until it was about half the thickness that it comes in so as to not risk breaking the box when putting the metal clips back on.

Be gentle when removing the metal clips, and take pictures of it as you take it apart and then bag and tag everything.

Ive gotten the DMT heater box rebuild kit already and it looks like an amazing kit.

I'll keep Glen-Ray in mind if I can't find a new one.

Problem with a new one is that you do not know the quality of thickness of the material. It may be cheap Chinese crap. Glen Ray did mine and it looks great and OEM.

I don't recall any rope caulk on the '69 box (non-a/c).

Mine was for an a-body. I assumed all the boxes that split in half would need the rope caulking between them.

That was exactly my thinking when I redid my heater core. I wasn't sure of the source so I went and got one from Glen Ray and used the DMT kit to put everything back together.

No rope sealer or metal clips holding it together. All screws on 66-70 B-body non AC

Another vote for Glen-ray. Mine was a 69 A/C box, different config from the non A/C heater core. Tried an aftermarket core and it simply didn't fit. Sent orig to Glen-ray and they took care of it.

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

Ive used a couple aftermarket heater cores for B body heater boxes.
They will work , just keep in mind the heater hose nipples are just a touch short where they protrude thru the firewall.
