ive got a 69 satellite wagon, and i want to upgrade my alternator. i read some old threads and found someone that ran a 136 amp denso unit from a Ram. That particular thread is 9 years old and im not so sure ill get amy help from that post. Does anyone have a story of putting a newer style high amp alternator on a small block?

im eliminating the ammeter guage, as one of the posts on the back of it is blown out. ive referenced the madelectrical guide for the process.

not looking for a custom alternator, rather keep it to "off the shelf" so it will only cost around a $100 or so.

For a grand + you too can run that serpentine kit rolleyes

Before you spend a bunch of money the question is, do you need that much alternator? The bigger the alternator the more the cost. Now if you "only" need about 80 amps look at the alternator for an 87 Dodge Diplomat, it will fit your setup alot easier and way cheaper than the Denso you mentioned. The 89 Diplomat had a 120A Denso alternator as an option and it'll fit your setup with some mount mods and new connectors on the wiring. Both of those are dual groove pulleys that will work with your existing V belt setup without the need to piss away a grand or more converting to serpentine belt.

ill look into the diplomat alternator as a plan B. i picked up a 136 denso unit out of a 98 ram and tried to do a quick mock up, but the width of the alternator looks to big to fit up against the cylinder head and line up with the pulley, although i cant really tell for sure cause the single groove pulley i bought wont be here for a few days. the alternator only cost me $20 from a local pick a part, so im not to worried if its too big to work

Should be a bolt on for a SB engine. Late model Magnum engines had 120 amp alternators from the factory. The mounting brackets are big and heavy but it should all retrofit. Denso 210-0138 is a 120 amp pulley used in late model Dodge cars and trucks and it has a double v belt pulley. I have a used one sitting on my shelf that you can have if you pay the shipping cost. Probably cost $30 to ship it to MI though so might not be a good deal.

If I'm not mistaken, is this only the Police Diplomat with the 120A Denso? Although, maybe it doesn't matter for his answer.

Probably, that is what I got mine off of when I updated my 87 Diplomat. Question really ought to be, does he need 120A? Probably not.

BTW, AndyF's alternator is the one that also fits the Diplomat application I mentioned.

He probably doesn't have electric windows, etc., but might like overkill like I do. I don't know why, I just do. I want to swap the one in my '79 Power Wagon, if for no other reason just to have dual pulley running two belts.

Where are you at in Michigan? I think I still have my 60 amp Denso kit laying in the garage. What really sucks with the factory alternators is the low RPM charge rate. The newer Denso alternators fix that, even if they don't advertise big numbers. I ran the 60 amp unit on a Fifth Avenue for years and my car has power everything. Only reason I swapped it out is because I went EFI and electric fans.

Kit has the brackets, alternator and plug. All you would have to do is wire it up.
