I just got my new project car home. It is a 66 B body and I will be installing a fairly mellow 440 over the winter if all goes well. The plan is budget street and strip car that can be driven regularly but kinda ratty etc. Got the second part covered for sure!

Typical low-compression 440 with a 750, SD intake, headers, street strip cam similar to a .484.

Rear gears will be 3.23:1. I need those gears because of distance. Tranny will be strongly built with a large cooler.

A buddy has offered me a Dynamic convertor that is 10" in diameter. The guy says it stalled 3500-3800 behind a really strong (much more than mine) 440.

Is this going to be a situation that will cause regrets with slippage? I am hoping not. I know convertor tech has come a long ways since the prevalence of GER and BOSS HOGG convertors when I was a kid.

Thoughts or experiences?

Thank you for your time.

Buy it and enjoy up twocents
I had a custom built 10 inch converter made by Chris at Continental converters for my 600 HP pump gas stroker 400 motor with iron heads and a low deck six pack set up, the converter was very tight (2300 RPM max down ) when foot braking it but would stall around 4500 RPM when flash stalling it. It would never get the tranny fluids above 200 F on the track or on the streets driving it hard on the street here Bend in the summer shruggy
I broke the sprague in that converter after several years of racing it a lot and 2500 or more street miles, I replaced it with a Turbo Action 8 inch SS race SS/AH Hemi converter that I had taken in on trade and it was way better on the track and really good on the street also boogie up

Funny you would reply, I was just in Bend. I ended up with the rougher 66 Belvedere from Redmond. Should stopped in and asked in person! It is likely going to be another school project car, still making that determination.

Thanks for the help.

I also found a PTC 9.5" convertor for around the same price-they are both lightly used. The seller says it is 4200 rpm flash.

Any preference for the PTC over the Dynamic? Same car, same usage as listed above.

If you plan on using the original '66 trans, be aware that it has the 19-spline input shaft which isn't compatible with the 24-spline converters you're most likely to run across.

Yes and thank you for the reminder. I haven't done much with these cars in awhile, and I found both spline counts so I had to look into that. There will be a BB in the car so the transmission will need to be switched to the newer 24 spline.

I ended up with the PTC 9.5". The guy said it actually drove pretty nicely in his B body with a too mild 383. When going up a hill or on it it would flash up but was fine around town and on the hwy.

I have switched my build plans back to an A body with more gear so it should work fine.
