I am installing a scatter shield and 4 speed transmission. The scatter shield came with grade 8 lock washers, flat washers and bolts to bolt the bellhousing to the block. Should I use the lock washers or just the flat washers? I know the factory only used flat washers. I have read that lock washers could come loose with time. Should I also use lock washers on the transmission or a star washer? Any recommendations.

I'd use the flat washers next to the aluminum

lock washers are for the illusion of locking. if they need to have lock washers go buy the right sized nord-lock washers.

In fact technically the term " lock washer" has been superseeded by "split washer", to indicate the original description was optimistic in its effect. In my lab the term lock washer has been frown upon for many years.

How many of each type washers? If the same I would stack then together with the spilt lock washer between the bolt head and the flat washer on the engine bolts and use the washers with the nuts on the other side with the split washers only and use the flat washers under the bolt heads up twocents

IMO I would use exactly of what the manufacture sent you, they know better than us. Why not? Lock washers work in many applications.

I too would go ahead and use the lock washers. The washer itself and longer bolt stretch length can only help.

A robust joint - like that one in my experience - is not touchy and should not need thread lock.

Like stated above I would use the given hardware, because the bottom line is they wouldn't give it to you if not needed. Why because it cost them money! In the event of failure guess where the investigation would begin. One last thing I would call the manufacturer with the question and let us know what they say.

Flat washer then smaller lock washer is what I do but then again on that area what was oem... bolt with flat washer.

Thanks guys, you have just killed a lifes long belief that lock washers that worked as named since ive never had a nut come off that had a good new lock washer on it.

Ive seen lockwashers that have lost there spring (went flat).

Now im questing everything in life.
