Howdy

I just started rebuilding the front suspension on my 1989 two wheel drive dakota. I have put upper control arm bushings in a bunch of A-bodies but this style with a pivot bar is new to me! I have torches, air chisel, a small shop press, and a decent collection of press tooling plus a good vise and big hammers.

All the ways I have removed UCAs before use allthread or bolts thru the bushings which are currently occupied by the pivot bar.

So far I got the lower control arm jacked up, the ball joints loose, the rusty shock stripped, marked the alignment for reinstallation, and took the pivot bar nuts off. I had to order a bigger upper ball joint socket- 2 9/64” or something. I won’t be removing the UCA to do the bushings until after I unscrew the ball joint so I have a couple days to think about how to get the top bushings out. I’m guessing it will be kind of like doing bearing caps on a universal joint where the pivot bar is captured in there?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Look on ebay.
There are all kinds of bushing, removal, and installation tools, kits to do that type of suspension work.

You might be able to find a local shop that will R&R the bushings if you take them the arms to them. This is the route I take.

Air chisel did the job on the UCA bushings I crushed the sleeves into themselves a little to relieve the press fit then hit and pried on the flange and after a while they came free. Unscrewing the upper ball joint was much worse I ended up dragging the ox/a torch out and using a six foot breaker bar before it started moving and that was still giving it everything I got. And I’m 6’3” 300lbs!
