I am changing valve locks on my Edelbrock RPM Performer Heads #6092 for a big block Chrysler. I bought them 15 years ago. The fact sheet I got with the heads as well as the Edelbrock website lists replacement valve locks as #9616. So I bought them in good faith but they won´t fit. They are not as beefy as the originals. They are 0.10“ shorter and 0.10“ less across from top. The current beefy ones also have a cup shaped top probably to retain more oil around the top of the stem. The originals as well as the ones I bought in good faith are both single groove for 11/32“ stem size.

Can anyone tell me the part number of those beefy ones I have? Comparison photo enclosed.

Thanks for replying

It looks like to me that you have a set of 10 degree keepers for lash caps and a set of 7 degree keepers with no lash cap provisions shruggy
How do the new keepers fit in the old valve retainers mount on the valve stems?
If the old retainer wobbles around on the new keepers and is tight on the older ones that is the problem scope

Thanks Cab

I tried the new ones on with the v-spring on the head, just to see what would happen, and they "sunk" well below the retainer top surface. They are 7 degrees, single grove for an 11/32" stem.

I am now wondering if the explanation for this confusion is that the heads were bought through a reputable engine builder and they perhaps switched to 10 degree retainers since the heads were intended for a race motor. Any thoughts?

my rpm's came with the 7 degree locks and retainers. those 10 degree locks you have look like comp cams.

I recommend using the best retainer and keepers you can get for any motor that will be revved up beyond 5000 RPM up work
I use a lot of Comp Cams 10 degree tool steel retainers on my street and strip builds now, 10 degree Titianium (SP?) on race motors that will see over 7000 RPM regularly up

Did you buy the heads as “ootb” heads, or “prepped”(reworked) heads from a cylinder head shop?

I’ve sold tons of those heads....... never saw any come from Edelbrock with 10deg retainers and locks.

Edit...... I guess I missed the post where you said you bought the heads from a builder.

The Comp std height 10deg locks for 11/32 valves are 611-16.
