Ok so I went to a car show on Saturday and I,m getting really tired of 3,000 rpm when i,m going 60. So here is what I have! 71 RR with a 440+6 auto trans and 4:11 rear gears with P275-60-15 rear tires. Going to change the rear gears so do i go with 3:55 or 3:23 . I,m afraid that 3:23 won,t give the low gear kick that I like. Opinions Please!!!!!!!

For the street with 15" tires, I love the 3.55s

That is what my T/A had, thousands of happy miles. :-)

I would go with the 3.23 if you do any significant highway driveway.

Personally I'd keep the 4.11(?)gears, and go with a 4spd auto OD or 5/6 speed manual...but that's just me, IMHO the 3:23/3:55 will disappoint you from a performance stand point on the street or track

3:55 with a 26 inch tall tire is what I have ran in past cars and what I put together for my Dart. It's usable on the freeway for reasonable distances. I would not want to do an 8 hour drive with that setup, but a short jaunt on the freeway to the next town for a car show is doable.

Your 275/60-15 tires are taller than what I have used so the 3:55 may be better than the 3:23.

Cheapest: tall rear tires
Most adaptable to wide range or driving: more gears, overdrive
Least amount of adaptation: Gear Vendors OD unit.
Every option I've seen for OD - auto or stick - ends up at least $3000 by the time you're done, plus some require cutting the floor or t-bar crossmember.
Personally, I'm not a fan of doing that.
The more I look at the available options, the better I like the GV. Plus the one in my Dually since 1994 has been bulletproof.

My Satellite has 3.55's with L 60-15 rear tires, I know my speedo is accurate because I took the time changing the trans gear and checking with a GPS. I go 65-70 on hyway at about 3000-3200 RPM's.

I can’t stand highway rpm’s. I have a 68 charger with a mild 408 stroker with 2.94’s in it that pulls nice and hard to 13.28 in the 1/4. and I only use 1st. and 2nd.

I still think it revs to much on the highway at 70mph.

I also have a 67 Coronet with 3.55’s and a gear vendors and it also revs to much for me on the highway. It pulls real nice through the gears though. Gears vendors unit don’t drop down as much as I would like.

3.55. I' run 3.55 on my 440 Cuda, 275/60/15s. More highway than city now that I've moved but it's still a great gear.

ANY rear gear is a compromise IF there is no overdrive and the car runs a mix of city and highway...period.

3.55 isn't perfect in town, and it isn't perfect on the freeway....it's just better at both (or doesn't suck as much if you are a glass half empty guy) than the others.

Cheapest and best option is put quiet mufflers on it and unplug the tach. 3000 rpms won't hurt a thing. Put a stand alone shift light in it for when you drive

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

If it's a cruiser/driver, go 3.23. A 440 makes plenty of torque to turns the tires still. If your barely on the highway 3.55s would be ok too with the 28" tires.

Put the 3.23 in it, the torque converter will allow you to still spin he tires at will shruggy twocents work
Actually the 3.23 will make the tires spin longer in first gear, don't ask me how I know that devil scope
Most butt dyno are very misleading when it comes to all out performance shock The time slip is not up scope

I've run 276, 323 AND 488 GEARS in the same car over the years. The 488 stand out as not drivable. Negligible difference between 323 and 276 performance wise but I'm thinking ill go back to 276 when the new torque engine goes in.

I also run an 833od with all the gears.

I think going from 4.10 gears to 3.23 you will not be happy with the results. I would go with the 3.55 gears.
